Still Salty

We usually spend our Sunday mornings at the movies and then head out for a late lunch.  Today it was Star Trek and Thirsty Marlin.  We started off with some calamari.

We order calamari almost every place we go, and this was surprisingly good.  It had a crunchy and flavorful batter and was pretty tender.  It came with marinara sauce, but I got a side of ranch which made it even better.  For his lunch, Loren ordered the blackened mahi sandwich.

He said the fish was cooked well and had good flavors.  I went for a steak philly and onion rings.

Though the first few bites were good, I found the saltiness became overwhelming after a while.  It just continued to build until I couldn’t take anymore.  I didn’t like the onion rings at all.  They lacked the appropriate crunch and were also overly salted.  I did enjoy the cole slaw though.  Total bill with a drink was $37.

Very Loud

We were looking for a quick dinner before heading out to a concert at Ruth Eckerd Hall, so we stopped in to the Beef O’Bradys on McMullen Booth & Enterprise.  It’s impossible to hear yourself think in this restaurant.  Guess it’s more about yelling at the TV’s than actually talking to the person you’re with and we weren’t even in the bar area.

Loren tried the Santa Fe Salad.

He said it was ok.  I’d have been all about eating the bowl, but I don’t think he even ate any of it.  I went for a boneless basket with a side of onion rings.

The onion rings were a disappointment.  They weren’t crunchy at all.  The chicken wasn’t as tender as I’d have liked it to be, but there was definitely more than I could eat in the basket.  The spicy sauce for the onion rings was way too spicy for me.  It seemed to take a really long time to get our food too.  Total bill with a drink was $25.

We were looking for some place new to eat tonight and ended up at Big Fred’s Famous Roast Beef in Clearwater.  It’s a little hole in the wall, greasy spoon type sandwich shop with a lot of things on the menu to choose from.  I figured I’d try the roast beef, since that is the name of the place, and Loren went for the bacon cheeseburger.

The lady at the counter said the best way to have the roast beef was with bbq sauce, mayo & cheese, so I tried it that way.  It was really sloppy, but really tasty too.  The bbq sauce was a bit on the tangy side.  The roast beef was very tender.  Loren liked his burger.  It was also a bit on the sloppy side with all the condiments.  We also ordered a large order of onion rings.

There were way too many onion rings for us.  Next time we’ll be ordering the small order.  They were crispy and crunchy.   Next time we’re looking for a quick meal, this is one of the places we’ll go back to.  The only downside was that the restaurant was a bit on the warm side.  Their air conditioner wasn’t quite keeping up with the July heat.  Total bill with a bottle of water and a soda was $17.

A Little Loud

A new Beef O’Brady’s opened up on Enterprise recently so we checked it out for dinner today.  It still smelled like new paint and the music was a bit too loud, but otherwise, the experience was pretty good.  Loren went for an O’Brady Burger with fries.

He said it was juicy and had a pretty good flavor to it.  The fries were crunchy and quite yummy.  I went for a patty melt and added some grilled mushrooms to it plus a side of onion rings.

I was happy with the burger.  Just like Loren’s, it had good flavor but the sour dough bread was toasted a bit unevenly.  The onion rings were really good.  We both devoured those.  They had a great crunch and flavor. Total bill with a drink was $23.

From the moment we walked into the Thirsty Marlin, the overwhelming smell of bleach was in the air.  It was not a pleasant, clean smell; it was a hit you in the face chemical smell that burned your nose and ended up giving me a headache.  It was awful.  We should have just turned around and left because the food didn’t make the experience much better.

We started off with some onion rings.

They had a good crunch, but were overly salty.  Loren tried the tuna salad.

He liked it. The tuna was fresh and he enjoyed the wasabi dressing.  I tried the lobster quesadilla and it was not good.

I didn’t like the tortilla, the texture was off.  I ended up just opening it up & eating the pieces of lobster inside but the lobster tasted like imitation crab with some spices on it and the cheese just overpowered everything.  Definitely not something I’d order again.  If we go back and the chemical smell is still there, we won’t stay next time.  Total bill with a drink was $35.
