Gigglewaters

Gigglewaters recently opened in downtown Safety Harbor.  It’s a restaurant, bar, and starting in July they’ll also be showing movies.  We parked out front where we saw the sign, but ended up walking all around the building because we weren’t really sure where it was.  Eventually we found the front door.   It’s the furthest left entrance if you’re standing in front of the building.  The first thing that hit us was how loud it was inside.  It was deafening.  Had there been a wait for a table, we wouldn’t have stayed, but since they had an open table, we gave it a try.

We started out with the onion tanglers & you get to pick two dipping sauces.

We got ranch and were going to get the kicked up queso sauce, but our waitress recommended the beer cheese instead.  It was good.  Thinly fried onions and both sauces were tasty.  Loren got a side salad, but wasn’t impressed.

He’s not an iceberg lettuce kind of person and it was just a wedge of iceberg, cheese, cherry tomatoes and mushrooms.  For his entree, he ordered the Brave Sir Robin.

It was a grilled chicken sandwich with guacamole, bacon, and crushed potato chips.  Unfortunately, the bacon was missing.  He even commented that the sandwich would have been much better with bacon, but couldn’t remember if it was supposed to come with it or not.  He said the chicken & guac were good & he liked the bun as well.  I ordered the chicken & waffles.

The menu said it came with maple syrup, so I didn’t think twice when I poured out one of the containers onto a waffle.  Come to find out, it also comes with a spicy chili sauce that’s meant for the chicken.  It was way too spicy for me.  A little head’s up would have been much appreciated.  The waffles were good, but I found the chicken to be a little over cooked & over crunchy for my taste.  It wasn’t near as tender as I would have liked it.  We also tried the bourbon pound cake for dessert.

It didn’t look like much when it came to the table, but it was the tastiest thing we ate.  They grilled the pound cake and it had a bourbon caramel sauce, and vanilla ice cream.  The pound cake had a nice texture after being grilled and the whole thing just went together well.  Our waitress was great.  She was funny and on top on things.  The owner stopped by and asked for feedback since they just opened.  We told her about the noise and she said they already had a sound engineer in there once and was having him back again.  It was also a little warm in there and she said the air conditioner guy was coming back as well.  We gave her comments on the food and she seemed to take them all in.  New restaurant growing pains.  We’ll be back after they have some more time to work out all the kinks.  Total bill with a drink was $52.

Burgers

Da Burger Joint recently opened up in Oldsmar in the space where Nosh Cafe was located.  We ordered at the counter and took a seat to wait for our food.  The first thing we noticed as soon as they started cooking our food was the smell of greasy smoke thick in the air.  Considering we were the only ones there, I can’t even imagine being able to sit in there after a bunch of food starts getting cooked.  They need to invest in a better ventilation system sooner rather than later.

Loren ordered the Pig & Cow burger, I went for the Get Ova Here burger and we split a side of panko breaded onion rings.

Loren & I disagreed about this whole meal.  He liked the flavor of his burger with it’s BBQ pork bits on it.  I didn’t like the texture of the onion rings and  I found the burger to be flavorless and way too greasy & sloppy to even pick up & eat.  Perhaps some cheese or condiments would have made it better, but on its own, it didn’t measure up to other burger places in the area.  Nothing about the experience made me think we need to try it again.  Total bill with a drink was $22.

Early Lunch

We went over to Thirsty Marlin for an early lunch.  We were the first ones in the restaurant, but it started to fill up quick.  We tried the pork nachos for an appetizer.

The nachos are actually onion rings covered in shredded pork and cheese.  They were tasty.  The pork had a sweet BBQ sauce on it, so I liked it more than Loren did.  The only issue is that they are heavy handed with the salt here, so after a while it gets harder to eat.   For his entree, Loren got the salmon dill wrap.

He liked the blackened salmon itself, but there was just too much of the dill sauce on the wrap.  He said after a bite or two all he could taste was the dill sauce.  He’d order it again, but with the sauce on the side.  I decided to try their Cuban sandwich.

It didn’t thrill me.  The mustard was overpowering and there really wasn’t anything special about the sandwich itself.  The meats weren’t flavorful and the bread was pressed a bit too much.  I always have high hopes for the food here, but it seems to be hit or miss.  Total bill with a drink was $38.

Sweet Bacon

We stopped for a late lunch at Cheddar’s today.  They were pretty crowded and we were seated way in the back of the restaurant, now known as the “ignored zone”.  I’m convinced our waitress’s tables must have been scattered throughout the restaurant because she certainly wasn’t anywhere near our table for most of the time we were there.  We decided to start off with some onion rings.

It was a heaping pile of onion rings for $4.  Way more than we could eat.  They had a nice crunch and the onions were cooked perfectly.  The only downside was that the more you ate, the saltier they got.  For his entree, Loren got the World Class Chicken sandwich.

He’s a big bacon fan, but he ended up taking this bacon off the sandwich.  It was a brown sugar cured bacon which meant it didn’t taste like bacon at all.  It was slightly sweet, but mostly had no flavor at all.  I ordered the half salad/half Monte Cristo combo.

The Monte Cristo is like eating a ham & cheese doughnut, especially when you dip it in the raspberry preserves that come with it.   Very sweet and tasty too.   Total bill with a drink was $22.

Winging It

We were looking for a quick late lunch after going to the movies this morning and ended up at Winghouse.  There must not have been any sporting events going on today because the restaurant was pretty empty.  We both went for some boneless wings and a basket of onion rings.

The wings were tender and the onion rings were crispy.  What more could you ask for.  There were actually more wings in there than I could eat at one sitting.  Total bill with a drink was $25.
