Bar Fly Saltwater Grill recently moved to a new location in Safety Harbor, so we went over there for dinner.  We were able to get a table without a wait, but the restaurant was crowded and loud.  We started off with some grouper bites and I somehow managed to delete the photo.   They had a very thin, flavorless coating and most of the fish was overcooked.  When I ordered the appetizer, I asked for a side of ranch dressing.  Of course, it didn’t come when the food was delivered and we were almost finished before the waitress came back around.   Our entrees came out before we finished the appetizer.

Loren ordered the Mahi Bowl and I went for the lobster mac & cheese.

He said the mahi itself was good, but the rest of the dish was simply missed opportunities.  Right ingredients, wrong execution.  There was no flavor to the beans or rice and the whole thing just fell flat.  The lobster mac & cheese wasn’t much better.

It came with a cup of lobster bisque and kettle chips.  The bisque needed salt and didn’t have a lot of flavor overall.  There were enough lobster pieces to cover the bread, but I’m not convinced that grilled cheese & lobster should go together.  The sandwich was dry and all you could taste was the cheese.  Total bill was $43 and I don’t think we’ll be returning anytime soon.

Tasty Seafood

We had lunch at the Lucky Lobster Co in Dunedin today.  It was a bit too warm to sit out on the patio so we chose a seat inside and ordered some lobster bisque and prosciutto wrapped scallops to start off.

The lobster bisque had an interesting taste to it.  It reminded me of tomato soup, but not quite.  It had some bits of lobster in it and you could taste some sort of wine or sherry.  It was a bit on the thin side and probably could have used some cream to thicken it up, but it was still tasty.   The scallops were melt in your mouth delicious.  They were perfectly cooked and seasoned and we both wanted more.

For his entree, Loren got the crab cakes with mashed potatoes and a side salad.

The dressing on the salad was a balsamic with bacon and he couldn’t get enough of it.  He really liked the crab cakes.  Not a lot of filler, lots of crab and lots of spices.  In fact, way too many spices for me.  I took one bite and my mouth was on fire.  I saw fried clams on the menu and when the waiter said they were whole bellied clams, I had to order them.

They reminded me of New England, crunchy and tasty, but not enough of them on the plate.  I definitely wanted more.  The fries and cole slaw were good too.  We finished off the meal with the chocolate lava cake.

It was rich and thick and chocolaty with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.  Overall, a really delicious meal, but on the expensive side.  Total bill with a drink was $71.

  • For dinner tonight, we sat out on the patio at Stewman’s on the Wharf in downtown Bar Harbor.  We started off with a bowl of lobster bisque and a salad.

    Lobster Bisque

The bisque had a nice flavor to it.  It was thick and rich and creamy, just the way I like it.  Loren’s $8 side salad had a mound of carrots on top of it.   We both decided to try the lobster roll.

    Lobster Roll 2

The lobster itself was ok, but the rolls were stale.  I expected more flavor from the lobster roll.  It just didn’t taste as fresh as I expected it to be.  The sweet potato fries were inedible.  They were overcooked and tough.  Figured we’d try some blueberry pie and ice cream.

It was ok, but ridiculously overpriced.  Everything in downtown Bar Harbor is just priced for the cruise ship tourists.  The service here was awful.  Our waiter continued to disappear for long periods of time.  Total bill after a 10% discount was $68.

  • Watery Clams

I was bummed when the Boston Cooker closed their location in Oldsmar, but today we decided to drive up to their remaining location in Spring Hill.  Unfortunately, the experience wasn’t worth the drive.  The restaurant in Spring Hill looks identical to the interior of Daddy’s Grill.  The best part of the meal was the rolls fresh from the oven.  We started off with some lobster bisque and Loren got a salad.

The bisque was really thick and in need of salt.  There weren’t any actual pieces of lobster in there either.  Loren got the seafood platter.

It had shrimp, scallops, fish, and oysters in it.  He said it was ok with the fish being the best thing on the plate.  The only reason I wanted to go here was for the whole belly clams.

What a total disappointment.  I had to send the first plate back because the clams were watery and mushy.  It was terrible.  By the time, the new batch came out, Loren was just about finished with his meal.  The second batch wasn’t as watery, but they weren’t great either.  Nothing like I remembered having them before.  We won’t be heading back up there again.  Total bill with a drink was $37.

    Quick Lunch

Some quick soup, salad, and sandwiches for lunch today.  We went over to MecaFresh and Loren got the half roast beef and a salad and I got the half eggplant parm with the lobster bisque.

It was all fresh, tasty and good. We didn’t get our free frozen yogurt today though.  I don’t know if we were supposed to go back up to the counter to get it or what.   They seem to be a bit inconsistent about how they offer it.   Total bill with a drink was $19.
