Bar Fly Saltwater Grill recently moved to a new location in Safety Harbor, so we went over there for dinner.  We were able to get a table without a wait, but the restaurant was crowded and loud.  We started off with some grouper bites and I somehow managed to delete the photo.   They had a very thin, flavorless coating and most of the fish was overcooked.  When I ordered the appetizer, I asked for a side of ranch dressing.  Of course, it didn’t come when the food was delivered and we were almost finished before the waitress came back around.   Our entrees came out before we finished the appetizer.

Loren ordered the Mahi Bowl and I went for the lobster mac & cheese.

He said the mahi itself was good, but the rest of the dish was simply missed opportunities.  Right ingredients, wrong execution.  There was no flavor to the beans or rice and the whole thing just fell flat.  The lobster mac & cheese wasn’t much better.

It came with a cup of lobster bisque and kettle chips.  The bisque needed salt and didn’t have a lot of flavor overall.  There were enough lobster pieces to cover the bread, but I’m not convinced that grilled cheese & lobster should go together.  The sandwich was dry and all you could taste was the cheese.  Total bill was $43 and I don’t think we’ll be returning anytime soon.

Lobster pounds are one of the mainstays of traveling through Mount Desert Island.  After going to see the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, we stopped at Thurston’s Lobster Pound for dinner.  It was all lobster tonight with a lobster salad, lobster stew, and a big whole lobster for me.

They do lobster right here.  The salad had big chunks of lobster, the stew was delicious and the whole lobster was perfectly cooked.  It was the best one I had on vacation.  We also tried their blueberry pie with blueberry ice cream.

The ice cream was really tasty and the pie was good too.  Total bill with a drink was $65.

  • We stopped at the Bar Harbor Lobster Pound for dinner.  They have a covered patio with picnic tables and luckily they weren’t too busy when we arrived.  We started off with some clam chowder.

    Clam Chowder

This was a good version but it had a very strong herb flavor to it that was unexpected.  Loren went for the crab cake and I ordered some fried clams and a lobster.

The crab cake had a lot of crab and flavor.  The fried clams were a bit on the chewy side, but the lobster was spot on.  We also tried the blueberry pie.

I didn’t like the crust on this one.  It just wasn’t flaky enough.  Total bill with a drink was $66.

  • We decided eating outside of downtown Bar Harbor was the way to go, so we stopped at the Chart Room Restaurant for dinner.  Tasty rolls were brought to the table and I couldn’t pass up trying their lobster stew.

They did a great job with the stew.  Big chunks of lobster meat in a creamy flavorful broth.  Loren went for the mixed grill which had tuna, scallops and swordfish.

He said all of the seafood was cooked well and there was plenty of it on the plate.  I decided it was time to break into a whole lobster.

    Lobster

    Potato

I grew up in New England, so I know the ins & outs of getting all of the goodness out of a lobster.  This one was perfectly cooked and quite tasty.  The baked potato was fine, but the peas & carrots should have been left off the plate.  They added no benefit whatsoever.  Then there was dessert.

    Chocolate Raspberry Cake

I think this may have been the tastiest chocolate raspberry cake I’ve ever had.  The cake was moist and chocolatety and the raspberry sauce added a nice zing to the cake.  Yum!  Total bill with a drink was $69.

  • We’re staying in Bar Harbor, Maine for the week and went downtown for dinner.  It was crazy busy and we ended up at Poor Boy’s Gourmet for dinner.  We had about a 30 minute wait and then got seated in an awkward table behind the bar and in front of the stairs.

They brought out some rolls and then we started off with the clam chowder and the crab cake appetizer.

    Clam Chowder

    Crab Cake

The rolls were hot and fresh and tasty.  We’re fans of a thick, creamy chowder and this one was very thin and soupy.  It had a good flavor though.  We were a bit surprised that the $9 crab cake appetizer only had one crab cake.  This is when you know you’re in a tourist trap town.  The crab cake was delicious though.  Full of crab, very little filler and a nice mix of spices.  The restaurant was packed, so it took a while for our entrees to come out.  Loren ordered the surf & turf which came with mashed potatoes and peas.

    Surf and Turf

    Garlic Mashed and Peas

The lobster on top was perfectly cooked and the steak was amazingly tender and flavorful.  I stole a few bites and it was very good.  The side dishes; however, were not.  I ordered the lobster Poor Boy pasta.

    broccoli

The lobster was tossed in a creamy sherry wine sauce over farfalle pasta.  The flavors were perfect in the sauce.  The lobster was cooked ok.  I thought the tail pieces were a little too chewy.  Overall though, a tasty dish.  Mine also came with a side dish and I chose the broccoli.  It was a cold dish and tasted like the dressing on pasta salad.  Let’s just say side dishes are not their specialty. We also got a piece of the white chocolate blueberry cheesecake to take back to our cabin and it was divine.

    White Chocolate Blueberry Cheesecake

Creamy and delicious with a good graham cracker crust.  Service was ok, but there were times when I felt as though we had been forgotten.  Total bill with a drink was $88.
