The Restaurants at My End of the Universe

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

We were heading to a different restaurant in Westchase for lunch & then noticed that they had opened a Crabby Bill’s, so we decided to check them out.  Not sure how long they’ve been open, but it wasn’t too busy for a Friday lunch hour.  We placed our order and waited what seemed like a very long time to get our food.  Loren ordered a salad with blackened grouper & I got the grouper cheeks basket.

The fish was good on both dishes.  Tender & flaky, just the way grouper should be.  The sides didn’t do much for me though.  The grilled corn wasn’t quite what I was expecting and the coleslaw was a little too tangy.  Total bill was $40 with a drink.

We went over to Jack Willies in Oldsmar for dinner tonight.  We sat on the patio, but I think we would have enjoyed our dinner more had we sat inside.  There was a table of loud, drunk people behind us and they allow smoking on the patio, so the overall atmosphere just wasn’t for us.  The food, however, was pretty tasty.

Loren ordered the blackened Mahi with fries.  He said the fish was fresh and tender with just the right amount of spice.

I ordered a fried seafood combo with oysters and grouper.  The waiter heard “shrimp” instead of grouper, so he had to take the plate back & then bring me another plate with the grouper.

It was  big ol’ plate of fried food.  The oysters were delicious.  I love me some tater tots and the hush puppies had a good flavor too.  The grouper is why we went there in the first place and it had a nice crispy coating and the fish was tender and flaky.  Total bill with a drink was $35.

We went over to Thirsty Marlin for dinner tonight.  Loren was craving grouper and this plate of fried grouper cheeks hit the spot.

The fish had a good crunchy batter and came with two sides.  He enjoyed the grouper dipped in the spicy Bahamian sauce.  I decided to try some sushi.  I ordered a Mexican roll, lobster roll and some salmon.

I wasn’t terribly impressed with the sushi.  The batter on the shrimp & lobster was so thick & crunchy that you couldn’t distinguish the two from each other.  There was also way too much rice on the sushi rolls.  They were just too thick.  The lobster roll had fried onions on top which was an odd choice.  They really didn’t add anything worthwhile to the dish.  I don’t think I’d order either of these rolls again.  The salmon was good though.  Total bill with a drink was $52.

    Good Seafood

I’ve pretty much taken Dunedin off of my radar since they installed parking meters, but since Hog Island has their own parking lot we ventured over there for dinner.  We say the same thing every time we come here, “the food’s good, but it’s way too loud!”  The noise hits you in the face when you walk in the door and doesn’t subside until you’re back outside again.  It’s just not enjoyable when you have to shout to have a conversation.  But, on to the food.  Loren ordered the swordfish which came with a salad and two sides.

He said the fish was tender & tasty.  A few too many carrots in the veggie mixture for him, but otherwise a tasty dish.  I ordered the po boy

It’s a mix of oysters, grouper, and shrimp on a ciabatta roll with fries.  There was no way I was going to be able to pick it up & eat it, but all of the seafood was crunchy and delicious.  The fries were nicely done as well.  Loren said he might have to order some fried grouper after tasting a piece in the po boy.  They didn’t have anything that tempted our sweet tooth tonight, so the bill was $39 with a drink.

  • So Slow

We went over to Jack Willie’s in Oldsmar for lunch today with a friend.  We haven’t eaten there in a while because the food had been hit or miss the last couple of times we went.  There was a pretty good crowd on the patio and around the bar, but it didn’t seem busy enough for how slow the service was.

Between the three of us, we ordered the Oyster Po Boy, the grouper sandwich and the Fish & Chips .

The food took way too long to come out of the kitchen.  I don’t think I could have eaten the Oyster Po Boy as a sandwich unless I wanted to wear half of it.  The oysters were fried nicely though.  The grouper portion seemed a little small, but it was blackened ok.  Besides the service, the other issue I had is that they allow smoking on the patio which completely ruins a meal for me.  Total bill with two drinks was $44.
