It was early so we headed to downtown Safety Harbor for dinner at Southern Fresh.   The weather was cooperative, so we sat out on the patio.   Their menu isn’t very big, so I’m pretty sure we’ve had this exact same meal before here.  BLT soup, roast pork, fried chicken & strawberry shortcake for dessert.

Small menus are fine when the food is as good as this and consistent every time.  Everything is fresh.  They cook the fried chicken to order, so although it takes a little longer to get to the table, it’s worth the wait.  The roasted veggies were tender, the mashed potatoes and gravy, made from scratch.  The strawberry shortcake is absolutely wonderful.  Total bill with a drink was $41.

Quiet Here

We went over to Johnny Grits in Tarpon Springs for dinner tonight.  At first we weren’t sure they were open since the restaurant was empty.  We like quiet dinners though.  We started off with the fried okra.

There was way more on the plate than we could have eaten.  They were crunchy and tasty, but a little bland.  Loren got the buffalo chicken sandwich and I went for the fried chicken benedict.

He said the chicken was tender and it wasn’t overly spicy.  The chicken on the benedict was good, but the poached eggs were overcooked.  If the yolk doesn’t come oozing out, it’s just not right.  Overall it was ok.  We’ve definitely had better here.  Total bill with a drink was $25.

Hearty Brunch

We got over to Johnny Grits around 11:00am this morning and had about a 15 minute wait.  By the time we left the wait was up to 35 minutes.  This place is packed on the weekends for breakfast.  Loren’s not much of a breakfast person, so he went for the smoked turkey club with a side salad.

It was a big sandwich and he actually ended up taking half of it home with him.  Perfectly toasted bread, smoked turkey and crunchy bacon.  He was a happy guy.  I decided to try the fried chicken benedict.

I opted to change the jalepeno cheddar sauce they normally serve with it to hollandaise instead.   Two perfectly tender fried chicken breasts over fresh biscuits with poached eggs and fried potatoes.  It was delicious and very filling.  There’s no coming to Johnny Grits without ordering a side of grits.  We choose the andouille, onion and cheese and added some mushrooms.

Other than adding a little salt, the grits are yummy here.  Smooth and creamy and a perfect size for two.  Total bill with a drink was $25.

It was a cool night and I wanted some comfort food so we headed out to Southern Fresh in downtown Safety Harbor.  It seems quite a few other people had the same idea tonight.  Since it wasn’t warm enough to sit outside, we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table.  It’s a bit loud inside when it’s this full, but it’s so worth it.

Loren chose the salmon salad for dinner and I got what I always get, the fried chicken.

They don’t have a large menu, in fact, I think it’s exactly the same as the first time we came here.  They’ve chosen to do a small number of menu items, but they do them right, every time.  The salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned.  The salad has mixed greens, capers, grilled asparagus, tomatoes and a tasty balsamic vinaigrette.   The fried chicken is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.  It’s cooked to order so it’s hot and fresh.  Real mashed potatoes and gravy plus roasted veggies round out the deliciousness.  And then, who could pass up dessert?

There’s not a bit left on the plate when we’re done.  It’s an angel food cake with sweetened strawberries and whipped cream.  Fresh and light, but oh so tasty.  Total bill with a drink was $36.  There’s a reason this place is busy.  The food, service and quality are consistent and great every time.

If there’s one thing I can’t pass up, that’s soul food.  As soon as I saw Daddy D’s online, I knew we had to go there for lunch.  It’s a little diner serving up some fresh, homemade, stick to your ribs food.  Loren ordered the fried pork chops and I couldn’t pass up the fried chicken.

The sign says it all.  The waitress told us when we ordered that it’s all cooked to order so it would be about 20 minutes for our food.  It was worth the wait.

Let’s face it, the sides are a big part of soul food dining.  Loren got the collard greens and okra and I couldn’t pass up the mac & cheese and potato salad.  Plus some homemade corn muffins.  The potato salad was exactly how I make it at home.  The greens had a nice flavor and the okra was crunchy and yummy.  I could have eaten another bowl of the mac & cheese.   Both the chicken and pork chops had a light coating on them, but sometimes simple is best.  The chicken was juicy and tender.  I didn’t think Loren would be able to finish both pork chops, but he scarfed them down.  The only disappointment is that they didn’t have any desserts made.  Otherwise, it was one of the best meals we had on our trip for a mere $22.
