A Senor Tequila location recently opened up in Westchase on Race Track Road.  It’s a spacious restaurant, but they’ve got it set up with two entrances so if you go in the wrong one, you have to walk through the restaurant to get to the hostess station even though there are servers standing at the other entrance.

I’ve actually been twice, once with a friend for lunch & then again for dinner.  Lunch service was slow to get the food out, but it seemed better at dinner time.  For the lunch visit, I had a chimichanga and my friend had the enchiladas with mole sauce.

This is pretty generic Mexican food.  The flavors are ok, but nothing is overly spicy or overly flavorful.  When Loren & I went for dinner, we started with some queso and then got the fajitas for two.

Loren said the salsa was vibrant.  Had a fresh taste to it.  The queso dip wasn’t too spicy.  The fajitas were a mix of chicken, beef, shrimp, and pork.  It was plenty of food for two people and the meats were all very tender and cooked well.  The lunch entrees ran about $8 and dinner with a drink was $35.

Loco Gringos

We were in Lakeland around dinnertime and after walking around Kentucky Ave and checking wait times, we ended up at Loco Gringos.  There was no wait and we quickly discovered why.  They brought chips & salsa to the table which was probably the best part of the meal.

Loren got the chicken curry tacos which were rather on the bland side and I tried the chicken chimichanga which was also nothing to write home about.  Everything tasted very generic and processed.

Service was slow and somewhat neglectful.  Definitely not a place we’d go back to.  Total bill with a drink was $23.

  • Sazon

We were heading through Sylva on the way back to the cabin and stopped at Sazon Mexican Restaurant for dinner.  It’s a small, out of the way place that served up some really tasty Mexican food.   Loren got the carnitas chimichanga and I went for one of my favorite dishes, puffy tacos.

Loren thought the salsa was fresh and tasty and really liked the chimichanga.  Everything was flavorful.  I love crunchy flour tortillas and you don’t see them at too many restaurants.  It’s such a light crunch compared to corn tortillas.  The tacos were simply meat, lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream, but it all came together in a perfect little bite.  Total bill with a drink was $23.

  • Carmelita’s Mexican Grill recently opened up where Spoto’s was in Dunedin.  We didn’t have any issues with parking, but there was a 30 minute wait when we got there.  I’m not sure exactly when they opened, but everyone seemed a bit frazzled and overwhelmed.  At one point, our waitress ended up giving up another table because she just couldn’t handle it.  We started with some chips and salsa and then both ordered combos.

Loren likes their salsa.  For his entree, he got the Del Rey combo.  It comes with a beef taco, cheese with shredded beef
enchilada, and a smaller version of the Del Rey burrito along with rice and beans.  I ordered the pick three combo and got a chimichanga, Del Rey burrito, and a flauta.  We both liked the food, but it’s fairly generic and not overly flavorful or spicy.  As I mentioned earlier, our waitress was overwhelmed and we waited a long time for both our food and then our check.  Drinks were never refilled either.  The other thing we both noticed is that both the waitress and the food runners were less than graceful when delivering things to the table.  They both slammed the food and glasses down with audible thumps.  I was afraid they were going to break either the glasses or the dishes.  Total bill with a drink was $33.

  • We were heading to Bradenton to see the DaVinci exhibit and had planned on eating at El Durango’s, but it was closed.  Alvarez Mexican Restaurant was across the street, so we ended up there instead.  It took a while before the waiter came by with menus and took our drink order.  In fact, while we were waiting, we watched another patron walk out due to poor service.  Loren liked the chips and salsa.

The salsa didn’t look like much, but he said it was fresh and tasty.  He ordered a #7 which is a taco, burrito and enchilada.

    20140215_2

He said the enchilada sauce was more sweet than spicy.  Overall, it was just plain, inexpensive Mexican food.  I ordered the beef and bean chimichanga.

The cheddar cheese sauce tasted like Cheez-whiz and seemed like an odd choice. The chimi didn’t have the same crunch as I’ve had at other places.  The flavors were very plain.  There was just nothing memorable about any of the food.  Total bill with a drink was $19.
