The Restaurants at My End of the Universe

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

We stopped at Brandon & Laura’s Cafe in Southwest Harbor for lunch.  It was a little cafe where the locals hang out.  Loren ordered the haddock sandwich with the salad bar.

Haddock Sandwich

Salad bar

This was the best tasting haddock we had all vacation.  It was perfectly cooked and tender.  We were both impressed at how tasty it was.  I went for the mushroom burger with onion rings.

Mushroom Burger

The onion rings were addictive.  Thin shoestring onion rings that I just couldn’t stop eating.  The burger was cooked well and had a nice flavor to it.  We opted for the strawberry shortcake for dessert.

Strawberry Shortcake

I’m not a fan of strawberry shortcake served on a biscuit, but it was ok.  Plenty of whipped cream to keep it moist.  Total bill with a drink was $23.

  • We were in Arcadia today and stopped at Wheeler’s Cafe for lunch.  It was a crowded little restaurant, but we were able to get a seat out on the porch.  Loren ordered the cheeseburger with a side of chili.

He said both were good.  The chili wasn’t spicy at all, but had a rich, tomatoey flavor.  I went for the country fried chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, and fried green tomatoes.

The chicken would have been better had it been flattened before being fried.  It was a bit on the tough side.  The mashed potatoes were homemade and yummy and the gravy had just the right amount of pepper in it.  As for the fried green tomatoes, they were quite greasy, but had a good flavor.  I wanted something sweet so we got a piece of the chocolate pudding pie.

This didn’t do it for me.  The pudding was a bit too gelatinous for me and I’d much rather have real whipped cream than whipped topping.   Overall, the experience was just ok.  The food took a long time to come out and our waitress disappeared completely.  She never came back to the table to check on us.  Another waitress brought our dessert and check.  Total bill with a drink was $21.

  • It’s been a while since we’ve been to the East Lake Cafe and unfortunately, this visit didn’t change our minds as to why.  I used to really like this restaurant, but the last few times I’ve been here, both the food and service left much to be desired.  Loren decided to try their International Salad.

First off, he misread the menu and thought it had bacon, but that was the least of the issues with this dish.  The avocado was under ripe and rock hard and had to ask the waitress to bring him some he could actually eat.  They also don’t dress this salad with anything other than a light sprinkle of oil.  He asked for some balsamic dressing just to get over the dryness of the salad.  Though the individual components of the salad were good on their own; together, they just weren’t cohesive.  It had hummus, ricotta cheese, tomatoes, sun dried tomatoes, cucumbers, basil and pita bread.

I ordered the onion & mushroom burger with American cheese instead of the Swiss it came with.

It was under done for a medium burger and lacked any seasoning whatsoever.  Just a really dull burger.  The waffle fries were good though.  Total bill with a drink was $25 and I doubt we’ll even bother to try again.

We went to a movie this morning and ended up at the reopened Village Inn over on Racetrack Road near Westchase.  The original Village Inn that was there closed a while back, but another franchisee bought the space and opened it up again.  They were crowded and we ended up with about a 10 minute wait for a table.

Loren wanted lunch & I wanted breakfast so he got a soup and burger and I got a skillet.

He liked the soup, but said the burger was really bland.  Completely lacking in seasoning.  I got the California skillet which had avocado in it that could probably have used another day or so to ripen further.  The pancakes were spot on and the rest of the skillet was tasty.  The only thing that got on my nerves about our dining experience is that every time a server went in or out of the kitchen they yelled that they were coming in or out.  Total bill with a drink was $25.

We were looking for a quick, inexpensive lunch after going to a movie, so we headed over to Daddy’s Grill in Oldsmar.  The lunch crowd was just finishing up as we got there.  Loren got a club sandwich & fries.

He said it was pretty good & ended up taking half of it home with him.  With all the layers, it really is like having two sandwiches.  I went for a mushroom burger & macaroni salad.

I like the burgers here.  It was cooked a nice medium & was juicy.  It could have used a little more seasoning though.  The macaroni in the macaroni salad was way overcooked & on the mushy side this time.  For some reason, though, neither one of us liked our server.  I can’t quite put my finger on why, but there was just something very abrupt and not overly friendly about her.  Total bill with a drink was $17.
