Irish 31

We had dinner over at Westshore Mall with some friends at Irish 31.  It seemed like more bar than restaurant, but the food was very good.  We started out with two appetizers, the guacamole and the boxty.

The chips were homemade, but a little hit or miss on crunchiness.  The boxty had Velveeta, bacon & chives surrounded by mashed potatoes.  They were interesting.  There was nothing left by the time our entrees came out.    Between the four of us, we ordered the shepard’s pie, the chicken pot pie, the ribeye sandwich and the forest mushroom chicken.

Everyone was happy with the food. Good flavors and textures.  I had the chicken pot pie and the puff pastry was so light & fluffy.  And since everything was tasty, we couldn’t pass up dessert.  Our friends got the bread pudding & we got the molten chocolate lava cake.

Again, nothing to complain about here.  The cake was moist with a deep dark chocolate flavor.  We were all stuffed by the time we left.  Our side of the bill was $45 with a drink.

Bland Breakfast

We were in Pinellas Park this morning & stopped at Busy Bee for breakfast.

Loren got an omelette with a side of grits & I got the 2+2+2, with pancakes, eggs, & bacon, plus a side of home fries.  Overall, it was just ok.  I ordered my eggs with cheese and all they did was melt a piece of cheese on top of them.  The pancakes could have been a bit fluffier and everything needed salt.  Can’t say that we’d go back.  Total bill was $19.

Casa Tina

We hadn’t been to Casa Tina in a while, so we headed over there for dinner tonight.  We remember when it was just a small, cramped restaurant.  They’ve expanded several times now and the place was loud and crowded, but at least we didn’t have to wait for a table.

We started off with the nachos minus the jalapenos.

These are just bean & cheese nachos with a little sour cream.  They’re good, but there are a lot more chips than available beans & cheese.  Loren ordered the Tacos Guadalajara.

He got one pork and one carne.  He said he liked the pork one better, but it’s all about the sauces.  There’s a jalapeno, a smokey one, and one that he said had a hint of habanero, but it wasn’t too hot.  I ordered the chicken flutes.

I asked for the salsa & guac to be on the side, but that didn’t happen.  Otherwise, this is my favorite dish here.  The flutes are crispy on the outside, but the chicken and cheese on the inside is tender, flavorful and yummy.  We’ll definitely try to sit on the outside patio next time because it was so loud inside that you could barely have a conversation.  Total bill with a drink was $45.

Big Roman’s Pizza

I had pizza on the brain, so we decided to try Big Roman’s Pizza on Drew St.  All the reviews I read said to order the meatball garlic rolls, so we did.

These are truly a meal in themselves.  Tasty meatball wrapped up in a garlic roll.  They were good.  We ended up taking half of them home since we also ordered a large pizza.

What can I say, I like leftover pizza.  We got meatballs & mushrooms with onions on half.  It was a good pie.  The crust & sauce were good and there was plenty of cheese and toppings.  I also got some cannoli to go.

They were tasty little cannoli, though they weren’t quite filled all the way to the center.  Total bill with a drink was $28.

Stillwaters Tavern

We were down in St Pete today to see the Star Wars Costume Exhibit at the Museum of Fine Art.  Afterward, we had lunch at Stillwaters Tavern.  It was busy, but we were able to get a table without a wait.  We started off with the artichoke dip.

It was tasty.  Smoked Gouda and Parmesan with kale & artichokes served with homemade crackers.  The crackers were a little odd.  Some had way too much salt on them, some didn’t have enough.  Loren got the F.L.T which is a fish sandwich with fried green tomato, lettuce and pickled veggies.

He said it was good, but as you can see from the photo, a little awkward to eat.  I tried the Tavern burger.

Though I liked the texture of the burger, it was desperately in need of seasoning.  Just a little bit of salt would have gone a long way.   It was tender and juicy with caramelized onions and a thousand island dressing.  Total bill with a drink was $43.
