So Slow

We went over to Jack Willie’s in Oldsmar for lunch today with a friend.  We haven’t eaten there in a while because the food had been hit or miss the last couple of times we went.  There was a pretty good crowd on the patio and around the bar, but it didn’t seem busy enough for how slow the service was.

Between the three of us, we ordered the Oyster Po Boy, the grouper sandwich and the Fish & Chips .

The food took way too long to come out of the kitchen.  I don’t think I could have eaten the Oyster Po Boy as a sandwich unless I wanted to wear half of it.  The oysters were fried nicely though.  The grouper portion seemed a little small, but it was blackened ok.  Besides the service, the other issue I had is that they allow smoking on the patio which completely ruins a meal for me.  Total bill with two drinks was $44.

  • We had lunch at Molly Goodheads today.  It was early, so they weren’t very busy.  We started off with a bowl of the He Crab soup.  Loren got the turkey avocado bacon sandwich and I tried the seafood salad sandwich.

The soup was good.  Loren really liked his sandwich.  He said it had a good combination of flavors with a bit of kick from the chipolte mayo.  My sandwich; however, was not at all what I was expecting.  It was more of a seafood spread than anything else and it’s also on the menu as an appetizer like that.  It was supposed to be shrimp, crab & lobster, but it was indistinguishable as any of those things.  I didn’t like the texture, flavor or anything about it.  At a minimum, it needed some crunchy lettuce.  It probably would be ok warmed up with some chips to dip in it, but just didn’t work as a sandwich.  Total bill with a drink was $29.

  • We went over to Dunedin tonight and had dinner at Hog Island Fish Camp.  It was a little too warm to eat outside, but I wish they could do something to damper the noise inside.  It’s hard to have a conversation when the dining room is full.  It’s the same thing I said last time we were here.  We started off with the crab cake appetizer.

    DSC01896

The crab cake had a nice crunch on the outside and it was filled with crab.  One of the better crab cakes we’ve had around here.  Loren went for the mixed grill for dinner.

He said the fish was blackened nicely and the kebab was cooked well.  The rice dish had a lot of fresh corn in it.  I went for the half portion of the shrimp & grits.

    DSC01899

The half portion was a bit too small for me for dinner.  It had shrimp and grouper cheeks over creamy grits.  The tomato gravy was ok.  It had a familiar flavor to it, but I couldn’t place it.  For dessert, we couldn’t pass up the orange cake.

It tasted just like a creamsicle.  The cake was moist and the orange flavor was prevalent throughout the entire thing, in the cake, the filling, and the frosting.  We licked the plate clean.  Total bill with a drink was $55.

    Early Lunch

We went over to Thirsty Marlin for an early lunch.  We were the first ones in the restaurant, but it started to fill up quick.  We tried the pork nachos for an appetizer.

    DSC01641

The nachos are actually onion rings covered in shredded pork and cheese.  They were tasty.  The pork had a sweet BBQ sauce on it, so I liked it more than Loren did.  The only issue is that they are heavy handed with the salt here, so after a while it gets harder to eat.   For his entree, Loren got the salmon dill wrap.

    DSC01642

He liked the blackened salmon itself, but there was just too much of the dill sauce on the wrap.  He said after a bite or two all he could taste was the dill sauce.  He’d order it again, but with the sauce on the side.  I decided to try their Cuban sandwich.

    DSC01643

It didn’t thrill me.  The mustard was overpowering and there really wasn’t anything special about the sandwich itself.  The meats weren’t flavorful and the bread was pressed a bit too much.  I always have high hopes for the food here, but it seems to be hit or miss.  Total bill with a drink was $38.

    So Loud

We went over to Hog Island Fish Camp in Dunedin for dinner tonight.  We got there around 5:45pm and there were a few tables left in the main dining area, but they filled up quickly.  The first thing we noticed was how loud it was in the dining area.  By the time it filled up, we could barely hear each other across the table.

Loren ordered the Mahi Mahi with a side of greens, which for some reason came out well before the rest of our meal.

    DSC01590

Even though the braised greens had bacon on them, they just didn’t have the unctuous flavor he was craving.  They were tender enough, but the vinegar was overpowering.  For his entree, he ordered the mahi mahi.

    DSC01591

He said it was yummy.  The fish was perfectly cooked and he liked the mix of zucchini, tomatoes and onions.  I went for the salt & pepper oysters which came with fries & cole slaw.  I also ordered the mac & cheese.

    DSC01593

The oysters had a good crunch and flavor and there were plenty of them.  The mac & cheese had an interesting flavor that I couldn’t quite place.  The sides are a shareable size, but paying $11 for the two of them seemed a little high.  They had a salted caramel mousse on the dessert menu that we couldn’t pass up.

    DSC01594

This was really tasty.  Smooth creamy mousse with Oreo cookie crumbles and whipped cream.  One of the best things about the meal.  Overall, the food was good, but we prefer to eat at places where we can actually have a conversation without having to shout at each other.  Total bill with a drink was $59.
