We really do know better than to visit a new restaurant during its opening week, but we decided to try Pisces Sushi Global Bistro tonight anyway.  Let’s just say they were still working out the kinks.  We were seated by one of the owners and she started to explain the drink menu to us, but since we’re not drinkers we just asked for water and an iced tea.  She said she’d check to see if they had any tea.  Then a waiter came by and repeated the same process.  Let’s just say, it was a long evening.

The owner said instead of bread, they serve rice balls.

It’s lightly fried sushi rice and they were pretty good.  A little crunch on the outside and dense rice in the middle.  This is where the waiting began.  A large group came in and I think that really overwhelmed them.  The noise level also got rather loud.  The owner came by and apologized for the wait saying that the chef was a perfectionist and didn’t like the first attempt at Loren’s dish, so they had to remake it.  Eventually, our waiter came back to the table and asked if it would be ok if Loren’s dish came out before the sushi I ordered.

The Jamaican Me Crazy was a spicy pork dish that unfortunately came to the table cold.  The rice was a little warmer and the veggies seemed to be right off the grill.  Loren liked the flavor of the dish, but would have liked it better had it all been the right temperature.  My Kanisu roll came out next.

I thought the cucumber was sliced a bit thick and the roll was very loose, but it had a good flavor to it.  Eventually, the Mexican roll and Royal California roll came out.

The Mexican roll was cold.  It had to have been sitting there for quite a while.  When the waiter came back to the table, I told him about the temperature of Loren’s dish and the Mexican roll and they offered to make another one.  The second Mexican roll came out really fast and was pretty good.  As for the Royal California roll, neither of us was very fond of it.  I didn’t like the texture of the snow crab and we both thought it had a less than fresh taste to it.  At this point we were just ready for the check, then the owner came by and said she had something for us.  The waiter than brought out a free dessert.

Although it was a nice gesture, neither of us is a fan of tiramisu.  They also took the Mexican roll off the bill.  Total bill with a drink ended up being $36.  They were very apologetic about the whole experience, but there really wasn’t anything about it that makes us think we’ll be back.  Hopefully, they’ll get all the kinks worked out quickly.

  • Just in Time

We drove over to Dunedin tonight and had dinner at Tom Yum Thai & Sushi.  We got there just before the crowd showed up.  Twenty minutes later and we’d have had to wait for a table.  I can never decide between Thai food and sushi, so tonight we had a little of both.  We started off with two sushi rolls, a California roll and the Green Dragon roll.

The green dragon roll makes such a pretty photo.  It’s a shrimp tempura roll with avocado & eel sauce on top.  Yum!  Loren got the ginger beef and I got some Pad Se-ew for my entree.

Fresh and tasty all around.  The veggies were crisp tender and everything melded well with each other.  I ended up with leftovers.  Total bill with a drink was $39.

  • Hot Tuna Sushi Bar has a lunch deal that we just couldn’t pass up today.  Two rolls with soup or salad for $9.95.  They had a pretty good lunch crowd in there today.  We both got salads and for our rolls, a salmon roll, a gator roll, a Florida roll, and a Mexican roll.

The gator roll is actually tuna & yellowtail with a spicy sauce.  All of the rolls were fresh and tasty.  We may have to put this on our rotation for lunch more often.  Total bill with a drink was $23.

  • Lobster Roll

We went over to Ban Thai for dinner tonight.  The weather was really bad, so I think that may be why the restaurant wasn’t completely full.  The last few times we’ve been here, it’s been packed.  While Loren went for some Nam Sod, I had to have a lobster roll and we split a Rainbow Roll.

He didn’t remember ever getting the Nam Sod here before, but he really liked it.  The lobster roll is a huge plate of goodness.  After a while the sauce starts to heat up for me, but otherwise, it’s just big chunks of lobster.  The Rainbow roll was also fresh and tasty.  Total bill with a drink was $43.

  • Hot Tuna Sushi Bar & Grille just opened up in Oldsmar, so we headed over there for dinner tonight.  We went early and were the only ones there for a while.  It’s an elegant looking space, but the thumping music they had playing just didn’t do it for us.  I admit, I’m not a twenty-something looking for a party atmosphere.  I just wanted a nice, quiet, tasty dinner.  They did deliver on the tasty part.  We started off with a salad and some dumplings.

Loren liked the dressing on the salad and we both enjoyed the dumplings.  They were a little crispier than I had expected, but the filling was flavorful.  For our sushi order we decided to try the fresh salmon nigiri, a California roll, a Mexican roll, a Gator roll, a Rainbow roll, and a Lollipop roll.

Though I loved the way the Rainbow roll looked with it’s rainbow colored fish eggs, the crawfish salad inside of it was a bit too spicy for me.  I didn’t eat the Gator roll since it was also spicy, but Loren said it was good.  The other rolls were also fresh and tasty.  I did find the sushi rice to be a little colder in temperature than what I’m used to.  Loren didn’t notice it, but it was the first thing that hit me about my first bite.  We both enjoyed the freshness of the lollipop roll.  The crunch of cucumber instead of rice is just such a nice change of pace.  I also couldn’t pass up a dessert called the chocolate trilogy.

It was beautiful to look at and tasted wonderful; however, it was frozen solid.  It absolutely needed to be thawed out for a while before serving so that it would have had more of a mousse like texture instead of ice cream like.  Besides the annoying music, I also found the use of brown butcher block paper on the tables to be less than appealing.  Every drink or cool dish left a mark on the paper.  It just seemed inconsistent with the vibe of the rest of the restaurant.  Total bill with a drink was $66.
