More Sushi

We were heading to the beach to watch the sunset and stopped at Sushi Spot in Largo for dinner.  They have a large menu of sushi options and it took us a while to figure out what to try.  We started off with a ginger salad & egg rolls.

The ginger salad dressing was pretty thick, but had a nice flavor.  Loren’s not usually a big fan of egg rolls, but he really liked these.  They were filled with shrimp, pork and veggies, had a nice crunch and flavor.  The sushi wasn’t quick to come out of the kitchen, but it was worth the wait.  We tried the John roll, the Snow Crab roll, the Lana roll, a Mexican roll, spicy Alaskan roll, and some salmon.

The rolls were big and filled with so many tasty ingredients.  Neither of the spicy rolls were too spicy for me to eat.  The John roll had tuna, fish eggs, krab, cucumber, and avocado topped with fresh salmon.  The Lana roll had spicy tuna topped with tempura salmon, tempura white fish, avocado & fish eggs.  The spicy Alaskan had salmon, spinach, & carrots with a spicy mayo.  The snow crab roll was probably my least favorite, mostly because it paled in comparison to the rest of the rolls.  We’d definitely go back.  Total bill with a drink was $66.

  • We had dinner at Thai Bay in Largo tonight.  They weren’t very busy for a Friday night.  We started off with some sushi; an East Bay roll, a Mexican roll, and some salmon.

The salmon was fresh and tasty and both of the rolls were good.  The East Bay roll had salmon, cucumber, scallions and avocado on top.  Loren also got a Nam sod and I tried their fancy duck.

The Nam Sod was good, but the duck was a bit on the tough side.  It was hard to eat.  I liked the veggies and sauce with it, but it just wasn’t tender enough.  Total bill with a drink was $53.

  • It seems most of the Thai restaurants around town have started serving sushi.  We hadn’t been to Amarit Thai in a while and decided to check out what they had to offer tonight.  We started off with some wonton soup, salad, and some crispy spring rolls.

The soup and salad were good.  I like their ginger dressing.  The spring rolls were a bit too crispy in places, but otherwise, they were tasty.  We ordered the tuna tornado, Mexican roll, spicy tuna crunch, some salmon, and a lobster roll.

The sushi was good, but the rice was a bit on the cold side for my taste.  I just don’t think there should be a noticeable difference in temperature.  The rolls were all a good size and we ended up taking some home.  It was a bit on the expensive side though, $78 with a drink.

  • Lots of Sushi

We met a friend of ours down in St Pete at Rain Sushi for dinner tonight.  It’s an a little strip mall and you’d probably miss it if you weren’t looking for it, but it’s definitely worth seeking out.  It’s not a very big restaurant, but the sushi was fresh, tasty, and very reasonably priced.

Our friend started off with a summer roll and Loren got a ginger salad.

The summer roll was light and fresh with all sorts of crunchy fresh veggies and shrimp.  For sushi, we ordered the Ultimate Daddy which had tuna avocado, eel and fish eggs; a Sloppy Old Man which had krab and crawfish over a spicy tuna roll; a Mexican roll, Special Scallop roll, Snow Crab roll, Spicy Crawfish roll, Spicy Tuna roll and some salmon.

It was a ton of food, but every roll brought a little bit of joy to the table.  Our friend has a gluten allergy and they were very accommodating.  This is definitely a sushi restaurant we’ll return to when we’re back in the area.  Total bill with a couple of drinks was $80.

It’s been a while since we’ve been to Aki Sushi in Oldsmar, so we decided to try it again tonight.  It’s not a very big space; they were busy, but there were still a few open tables.  We ordered the appetizer sampler and 4 sushi rolls.

Loren and I viewed the experience very differently tonight.  While he felt the servers were being efficient, I felt like I was being rushed.  The above part of the sampler was dropped at our table without explanation.  The server literally was looking away from our table as it was placed and then he walked away.  We both looked at each other quizzically since I could have sworn the sampler had more items on the menu.  This was the 3 spring rolls and 2 rangoons.  They had a good crunch and good flavors, but I was still confused.

Two of the rolls showed up next and eventually another server glanced over and said the rest of the sampler would be coming soon as well. Nice to finally know.  The Catch 13 roll had spicy salmon, asparagus, tuna, lemon and jalapeno and I ordered the shrimp tempura roll.

Loren liked the Catch 13.  He said the thinly sliced lemon and jalepeno added a nice flavor to it.  The shrimp tempura had a nice crunch on the shrimp.  The rest of the appetizer sampler finally showed up.  It had the 3 gyoza and 2 shumai.  I liked the gyoza more than the shumai.

Our last 2 rolls arrived, the Summer Time which was tuna, salmon, mixed greens in rice paper and the Dragon which was krab, cucumber, avocado and eel.

The eel was torched a little too much for my taste, but otherwise the rolls were good.  I actually had a difficult time choosing rolls because the combinations of ingredients just didn’t appeal to me.  More than anything else, though, it was the service that bothered me.  Normally, I don’t mind ninja type servers that clear plates quickly, but this felt impersonal and I felt rushed.   Total bill with a drink was $60.
