Back Again

Quick lunch at Craft Street Kitchen.  We’re here almost every weekend.  Today Loren tried one of this month’s specials, the Nashville chicken tacos and I went with the knife & fork BLT.

The chicken tacos had a bit of spice in the batter, but the vinegar sauce that comes with it was very spicy.  The waitress recommended getting it on the side and it’s a good thing she did.  He put a little bit on the chicken and that was plenty.  The knife & fork BLT has fried green tomatoes, bacon, corn, avocado, onions and a little bit of red peppers on it.  It was a tasty lunch for $22.

We were down in Gulfport tonight and stopped at O’Maddy’s Bar & Grill for dinner.  They were busy and we had about a 30 minute wait before being seated at an inside table.  It was so cramped and loud in there that you couldn’t have a conversation without yelling across the table.  The food, however, did make up for the close quarters.

We started off with the crab cakes.

Very little filler, which is the way a crab cake should be.   It had a nice crust on the outside, a little bit of heat, and a light drizzle of hollandaise sauce on the plate.  Loren’s meal came with soup or salad and he got the mushroom soup.

It was tasty.  It had an earthy flavor to it and had some sort of cheese in it.  I kept stealing bites of it.  For his entree, he got the swordfish with mashed potatoes.

The swordfish had a spicy tomato jam on it.  He said the fish was cooked perfectly and it all worked well together.  I went for the lobster BLT with a side of onion rings.

The sandwich had big chunks of lobster in it.  The bacon was a bit too crispy for my taste, but overall it was pretty darn good.  I’d order it again.  The onion rings were nice and crunchy on the outside and tender in the middle.  Total bill with a drink was $51.

    So Loud

We thought we were going to dinner at the Palm Harbor Bistro only to discover Detroit Coney Island had taken over the restaurant space.   They seemed busy, so we stayed for dinner.  They were having a Friday fish fry and the air in the restaurant was thick with a greasy fried smell.  Loren ordered the pastrami burger and I decided to try the fried fish.

Loren said the burger was good.  It was cooked a bit past the medium that he ordered, but otherwise it had a good flavor and the pastrami was tasty.  Though I’m not a big fan of cornmeal crusted fish, this one was good.  You get a choice of three different varieties of fish and I went with the walleye.  It was piping hot when it got to the table and the fish was tender and flaky.  Overall the food was good.  The downside for us was how loud it was inside.  And it wasn’t due to the customers, it was the waitstaff.  They would yell across the restaurant to each other.  At one point, there was someone directly behind Loren yelling to someone at the other end of the restaurant about cleaning off a table.  It was like being back in my Italian family where they only have one volume level and that’s loud.  If we decide to go back again, we’ll definitely sit outside.  Total bill with a drink was $23.

After visiting the Irish 31 at Westshore Mall, I discovered it has another location in Westchase which is much more convenient for us.  We’ve actually been there twice in the last few weeks and the weather’s been so nice that we were able to sit outside.

We started off with some hummus.

The hummus was tasty.  Not too much garlic and it was served with both pita and sliced cucumbers which was a nice change.  Loren got the corned beef and turkey club.  It was piled high and he ate every last bit of it.

I went for the Forest Mushroom chicken.  This has 3 chicken breasts plus fingerling potatoes and veggies.  I definitely had leftovers.  The chicken was very tender and the port wine mushroom sauce was yummy.

We both wanted something sweet, so he got a root beer float and I went for the chocolate lava cake.

Both satisfied our sweet tooth. The root beer float was huge and the chocolate cake with thick and fudgey.  Good stuff.  Total bill with a drink was $52.

We went back again and had a quick lunch of appetizers.

This time we got the hummus again, plus the pot pie bites and the gyro flat bread.

All of them were delicious.  The pot pie bites were “burn the roof of your mouth” hot, so those had to be eaten last.  The flat bread had a very flavorful Greek dressing along with the chicken, lettuce, tomato & tzatziki sauce.  Loren also got another root beer float.  Truth be told, that’s the reason we went back so soon.  Total bill was $29.

We were in Pinellas Park this morning & stopped at Busy Bee for breakfast.

Loren got an omelette with a side of grits & I got the 2+2+2, with pancakes, eggs, & bacon, plus a side of home fries.  Overall, it was just ok.  I ordered my eggs with cheese and all they did was melt a piece of cheese on top of them.  The pancakes could have been a bit fluffier and everything needed salt.  Can’t say that we’d go back.  Total bill was $19.
