More Sushi

We were heading to the beach to watch the sunset and stopped at Sushi Spot in Largo for dinner.  They have a large menu of sushi options and it took us a while to figure out what to try.  We started off with a ginger salad & egg rolls.

The ginger salad dressing was pretty thick, but had a nice flavor.  Loren’s not usually a big fan of egg rolls, but he really liked these.  They were filled with shrimp, pork and veggies, had a nice crunch and flavor.  The sushi wasn’t quick to come out of the kitchen, but it was worth the wait.  We tried the John roll, the Snow Crab roll, the Lana roll, a Mexican roll, spicy Alaskan roll, and some salmon.

The rolls were big and filled with so many tasty ingredients.  Neither of the spicy rolls were too spicy for me to eat.  The John roll had tuna, fish eggs, krab, cucumber, and avocado topped with fresh salmon.  The Lana roll had spicy tuna topped with tempura salmon, tempura white fish, avocado & fish eggs.  The spicy Alaskan had salmon, spinach, & carrots with a spicy mayo.  The snow crab roll was probably my least favorite, mostly because it paled in comparison to the rest of the rolls.  We’d definitely go back.  Total bill with a drink was $66.

  • We had dinner at Thai Bay in Largo tonight.  They weren’t very busy for a Friday night.  We started off with some sushi; an East Bay roll, a Mexican roll, and some salmon.

The salmon was fresh and tasty and both of the rolls were good.  The East Bay roll had salmon, cucumber, scallions and avocado on top.  Loren also got a Nam sod and I tried their fancy duck.

The Nam Sod was good, but the duck was a bit on the tough side.  It was hard to eat.  I liked the veggies and sauce with it, but it just wasn’t tender enough.  Total bill with a drink was $53.

  • Indian Food

We were headed to the Holiday Lights at the Florida Botanical Gardens and stopped at Taste of Punjab for dinner.  They weren’t busy at all, but the food was good.  Loren munched on the papadum while we waited for our food.

I’m so predictable when it comes to Indian food.  Butter chicken is my go-to dish and this one did not disappoint.  I order it mild, but it still had enough heat and a wonderful mix of spices and flavors.  That’s what I love about Indian food; each bite tempts a different part of your tongue and it all melds so beautifully together.

We also got the garlic naan and Loren tried the goat korma.

I think the only thing he didn’t like about it was that the goat still had bones in it.  Other than that, it had a great flavor and the medium spiciness was just right for him.  If we’re down in Largo, we’d definitely eat there again.  Total bill with a drink was $37.

  • We were in Largo this afternoon and stopped at Culver’s for lunch.  It’s a burger chain popular in Wisconsin and the midwest.  You order at the counter and then they bring the food out to you.  Loren decided to be different and got a prime rib sandwich with onion rings and I got the mushroom burger with their famous cheese curds.

For a while there, we weren’t sure if we were going to get our food.  It was ridiculously slow coming out of the kitchen and quite honestly, not worth the wait.  The burger was overly salted and the cheese curds tasted no different than cheese sticks you get at any chain restaurant.  Maybe they’re better if they’re fresh out of the fryer, but these weren’t all that warm.  Loren said the prime rib was ok.  Nothing to make us want to come back here.

We figured we might as well try the frozen custard since it wasn’t likely we’d be back.

It’s a good thing we didn’t need to be anywhere this afternoon because it took even longer for these to come out than it did our burgers.  No wonder it’s so hard to find a table in the restaurant, everyone’s just sitting there waiting.  As for the custard, they were very good.  Thick, rich, and creamy with good flavor and texture.  You can mix in a bunch of different toppings.  Loren got vanilla with caramel and brownies and I got the chocolate with hot fudge and Oreos.  Total bill with a drink was $24.  The food is average, the custard very good, but they need to work out the timing of getting the food to the tables.  The wait was just way too long for fast food.

  • Loren was in the mood for a salad tonight so we headed over to Largo and had dinner at Athenian Garden.  It had been a while since we’ve eaten here, but I remembered the Greek salad was tasty.  We started off with some bread and dolmades.

The bread is crusty and soft and  would be even better if it was served warm.  The dolmades had a flavorful filling and the lemon sauce on top was good without being overwhelmingly lemony.  Loren ordered the tabouleh and hummus salad.

It looked like a small volcano, but he enjoyed it.  I ordered the gyro platter which also came with a Greek salad.

The gyro meat was served with grilled onions and peppers and a side of very garlicy tzatziki sauce. It also came with rice and pita.  I really like the Greek dressing and potato salad here and the gyro was very good.  I’d order it again.  Total bill with a drink was $28.
