German Lunch

I was in Orlando with my sister & niece and we had lunch at Schumann’s Jagerhaus.  The place was completely empty at noon on a Saturday.  We ordered the Jager Schnitzel, veal goulash,  and a burger.

The Jager Schnitzel was tasty and there was plenty of it.  It was tender and the had a nice mushroom gravy on it.  It came with two sides, but I wanted the Spätzle instead.  I don’t have an issue with an upcharge for something different, but I do expect the waitress to mention it.  In this case, all she asked is if I wanted Spätzle to replace both sides & I said yes, not knowing she was going to charge me separately for both.  I didn’t actually need two portions of it.

The goulash and the burger were both ok.  The beef was tender in the goulash, but the Spätzle without the cheese was kind of dry.

None of us were really that impressed with the food.  It was just ok.

  • I was in the mood for some Jaegerschnitzel, so we went over to Lagerhaus in Palm Harbor.  Our meals came with salads and they had some pork stuffed mushrooms as a special appetizer tonight that we decided to try.

The pork in the mushrooms seems a bit sweet to me, but the mustard dipping sauce was a smokey, mustard, spicy sauce that counterbalanced the sweetness.  They didn’t last long.  Loren decided on a Club sandwich.

Lots of ham, turkey & bacon.  He ended up taking half of it home.  My reason for coming here, the Jaegerschnitzel and cheese spaetzle.

I hadn’t poured the mushroom gravy on it yet just to show how big this piece of pork is.  Definitely enough for two meals.  It’s very tender and flavorful with the gravy.  The spaezle is cheesy, and oh so yummy.  I even ordered a second side of it to take home with the rest of the pork.  There’s no way I could finish this in one sitting.  We tried the chocolate cake for dessert.

I’m thinking they heated it up just a tab bit too long.  It was tasty, but the fudgey frosting and middle was a bit liquified.  Don’t get me wrong, we ate every last bite of it.  Total bill with a drink was $47 and we both had leftovers.

  • Hofbrauhaus

We were excited to see Hofbrauhaus, a new German restaurant open up in St. Petersburg, only to be disappointed with the quality of the food we received.  The space is a big open area with balconies.  We were seated upstairs with a view of the large hall beneath.  We got there around 11:45am and were able to get a parking space in their small lot and there weren’t that many other patrons inside which surely kept down the noise level.  I imagine with a rowdy crowd in that wide open space that it’s deafening in there.

Our entrees came out of the kitchen very quickly; unfortunately, we had ordered the potato pancakes as an appetizer which were nowhere to be seen.  The waitress apologized and went to get them, but by the time she finally returned, we were pretty much finished with our meal and just sent them back.

Loren ordered the Nürnberger Rostbratwürstl which were pork sausages served with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut.

To me, they tasted like regular ol’ hot dogs and Loren said without the mustard they were just very plain and uninteresting in flavor.  I ordered the Jaegerschnizel which came with spaezle.

For some reason, they thought bacon would make it better, but even bacon wasn’t going to help.  First off, the portion was very small compared to what I’ve gotten in every other German restaurant I’ve been to.  The pork was tender, but flavorless and the spaezle was dry.  There wasn’t enough mushroom gravy on it either.  The only saving grace to the meal was the Black Forest Cake.

At least they got this one right.  The cake was moist and tasty.  I would have preferred real whipped cream to whipped topping, but otherwise this was the only high point of the meal.   We won’t be going back; there are much better German restaurants in the area. Total bill with a drink was $40.

We hadn’t been out to The German Restaurant in Holiday in a long time and every time we go back we wonder why we don’t go more often.  The food is so hearty and fresh.  They started us off with some warm bread and I can’t resist the potato pancakes.

It’s such a simple dish, but has the right amount of crisp and soft in the same bite.  Next up was some goulash soup and salad for Loren and the chicken soup for me.

The chicken soup had that homemade flavor to it, but the noodle were a bit mushy.  The goulash soup had an interesting flavor to it.  It’s got some spices that you wouldn’t normally associate with German food, but Loren licked the bowl clean.  For his entree, he went for the Farmer Sausages with potato salad and red cabbage.

He liked everything on the plate.  The sausages were cooked perfectly and had a nice smoky flavor.  I can’t resist ordering the Jaegerschnitzel with spaetzle.

This is one of my all time favorite meals.  The pork is cooked perfectly with this amazing buttery coating on it.  The mushroom gravy is thick and flavorful and the spaetzle is so yummy.  There’s way more on this plate than I can eat in one sitting, so leftovers are an added bonus.  And there’s just no walking away with out a piece of black forest cake.

Moist chocolate cake with a creamy filling.   Delish!  The service is very friendly here and you never walk away hungry.  Total bill with a drink was $59.

  • We both like German food and found our way to Berliner Kindl German Restaurant in Black Mountain for dinner.  The aromas as you walked in the door were enough to perk up both our appetites.  We started off with some meatballs and cabbage soup.

Yummy little meatballs with fresh bread and a cabbage soup that had some great flavors.  Loren got the bratwurst and I went for the Jaeger schnitzel.

Everything was perfectly cooked with those authentic German flavors throughout.  I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have spaetzle on the menu, but there was plenty of food to fill us both up.  We both tried the cabbage, plus potato salad and home fried potatoes.  And yet, we couldn’t pass up the freshly made apple strudel.

It was warm with tender apples and a beautifully sugared, crunchy pastry.  Yum!  Total bill with a drink was $48.
