We don’t often get up to Lutz for dinner, but we headed out there tonight to eat at Mekenita Mexican Grille.  They were pretty busy tonight.  We munched down some chips and sauce while waiting on our burritos.

The dipping sauce has a nice smokey flavor about it, but it was a bit cold tonight, like it had just come out of the refrigerator.  Loren ordered the grilled steak burrito and I ordered the shrimp burrito.

Unfortunately, these burritos didn’t live up to our expectations.  Whoever was in the kitchen putting them together didn’t put a whole lot of care in getting the ingredients spread properly throughout.  We both found one half of our burritos to have a lot less sauce and flavor than the other side.  It had good flavor overall, but just wasn’t as good as we’ve had in the past here.  Total bill with a drink was $21.

  • Best Burritos

Well, this is where this blog began.  Mekenita Mexican Grille in Lutz.  It’s such an unassuming little restaurant at the end of a strip mall, but as far as I’m concerned, they make the best burritos around.

You order at the counter and then they bring out some chips and salsa to your table.

This is the one place where I actually eat the chips and salsa.  It has a smoked chipolte flavor.  Not too spicy, but is amazing with the warm chips.  They had to bring us out a second batch because the first didn’t last very long.

My burrito of choice is the Crispy Tiger Shrimp Burrito.

This is one big ol’ stuffed burrito.  It’s filled with crispy fried shrimp, refried beans, citrus rice, cabbage, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and a cilantro lime aioli.  It’s the lime aioli that really sets off this dish.  I was able to finish half of it and the just tore apart the other half and ate the shrimp.  There was no way I could finish the whole thing.

Loren ordered the Grilled Skirt Steak burrito.

He was only able to eat half of his too.  They really stuff the burritos full.  They also have a salsa bar so you can add some heat to your dish as well.   Total bill was $20 with a drink.

  • Goodbye 2009

I discovered the Mekenita Mexican Grille earlier in the year when I did a Google search of restaurants near the nature preserve we were heading to.  It’s a small restaurant at the end of a shopping plaza.  You’d probably miss it if you didn’t know it was there.

You order at the counter, then they bring chips and salsa to your table.  I guess it’s considered a salsa.  Mind you,  I don’t normally eat salsa, but I couldn’t stop eating this smokey, tomatoey, yummy concoction.  And the chips are really good too.

Both times I’ve been there, I’ve gotten the same thing, the Crispy Tiger Shrimp Burrito.  The shrimp are amazing and they’re rolled into the burrito with beans, citrus rice, cabbage, cheese, sour cream, and a lime aioli sauce that gives it a very unique flavor.  The burrito is huge.  I only managed to eat half of it, then tore apart the other side and ate the shrimp and rice.  Loren got the Wahoo Tacos.

For the two of us, total bill was $21.19.

If you like fresh, unique flavors, this is the place to go.  We found out the hard way, they’re closed on Sundays.
