I’m on vacation all week and we’ve been craving cheeseburgers, so headed over to Athens in downtown Safety Harbor.

A mushroom cheeseburger with fries for me and a bacon cheeseburger with a side of chicken noodle soup for Loren.

He really liked the soup and we both devoured the burgers.  They’re just fresh, simple, inexpensive, and tasty.   Total bill with a drink was $16.

I made Loren get up early today and walk around the south end of the Las Vegas strip with me since that was the one part I hadn’t been to yet.  Since he was still on Florida time, it felt like lunchtime to him, so we stopped at FatBurger and had a burger and fries for breakfast.

I gotta say, this was a pretty darn good burger & fries.  It was fresh,  juicy and flavorful and the fries were hot and crispy.  For $15 with a drink, it really hit the spot.

Thinking Hurricane Isaac was headed our way, we went to downtown Safety Harbor for a quick lunch at Athens.

A couple of burgers, some fries and onion rings and we were good to go for the rest of the afternoon.  Total bill with a drink was $15.

Burgerlicious

We were going to a play in Tampa today so we ate lunch at Oakley’s Grille.  It’s a little sandwich shop and I’m glad we got there when we did because the place filled up fast.  I went for a mushroom burger since they’re famous for their burgers.  Loren got the muffaleta sandwich.

He said it was good, but more like a Cuban sandwich.  He prefers the muffalettas at the Cleveland Street Café.  He said he would have liked some additional veggies on it, maybe some lettuce and tomato and would have preferred it not pressed.

My burger was really flavorful.  Cooked a perfect medium, juicy, and dripping cheese and mushrooms.  They actually put the mushrooms on top of the cheese.  I think I would have put them under the cheese to help seal them in.  We split an order of fries between us.  At first, I really liked them, but the more I ate, the more I realized just how salty they were.  The staff was very friendly, though with the open kitchen, I could see the cooks getting a little confused with some of the orders.  Overall, though a pretty tasty lunch for $20.

  • July 4th is one of those days where you end up driving around until you find some place that’s open for lunch.  We ended up at Peggy O’Neill’s in Oldsmar.  There were a few people in there, but the servers were no where to be found.  It didn’t seem like anyone was watching the front of the house even though there was someone behind the bar.  After about 15 minutes of sitting there, our waitress finally showed up to bring us menus.

They were having a burger & fries special for $4, so we both ordered that.

The burgers were tasty, cooked a little past medium, but otherwise pretty good.  The fries were ok.  It’s hard to complain about a $4 burger, but I was a little miffed that they charged us an extra 50 cents for each burger.  I’m not sure if it was for cheese (though I swear the special was for cheeseburgers & fries) or if it was for the lettuce and tomato.  I guess I just feel like if you’re being asked if you want something additional with your food and there’s an additional cost associated with it, no matter how small, that you should be informed.  I wouldn’t have thought twice about a $5 burger that just included everything.  With a drink, the total bill was $12.
