The Restaurants at My End of the Universe

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

We were going to have lunch at the Latin American Grill in Oldsmar only to find out it’s closed and an Indian restaurant will be moving into the space soon.  So, we headed over to the Oldsmar Cop Shop since it’s in the same plaza.

It wasn’t too busy for a Tuesday afternoon.  We both decided on burgers for lunch.

I got mine with sweet potato fries and they serve them with a little container of whipped cream.  Can’t say I’ve ever had whipped cream with my fries before, but it was actually pretty good.  The burgers were both juicy and flavorful.  The only issue I had was that they charge 79 cents each for every topping.  Total bill for the two burgers, fries, and a drink was $22.

And I wasn’t as enamored at the scantily-clad waitresses as Loren was.  😉

We went over to Jack Willies around 3:30pm today for lunch.  It must have been in-between shifts as the service seemed to be lacking throughout the restaurant.   Our waiter took our orders before another table who had been seated before us and several people seated on the deck came inside to ask when someone would be coming to take their orders.

Loren ordered a blackened grouper sandwich with fries.

He said it was tasty.  I ordered the mushroom swiss burger with fries.

It tasted good, but was cooked a medium well instead of medium.  I usually love the fries at Jack Willies, but these weren’t as good as they have been in the past.

I wanted a chocolate dessert, but they were out, instead on the advice of the waiter, we got the apple crumble.

It wasn’t very good.  The apples weren’t cooked long enough.  We ate the ice cream and some of the crust but left almost all of the apples on the plate.  Total bill was $33.  We used to love going to Jack Willies.  The food and service were always good.  Lately though, it seems to have gone downhill.

Fast Food

We try to avoid fast food burgers as much as possible, but tonight was one of those nights where it was just convenient to drive through Burger King on the way home.  Surprisingly, this was our first Burger King stop all year.

I grabbed a couple of Whoppers, some fries and onion rings and brought them home.  Typical fast food.  The burgers were plopped together and messy and the onion rings had been waiting around too long.  I’m convinced the only way you can get fresh onion rings at BK is if you stand there and wait until a new batch comes up.  They just don’t have a long shelf life.   Total was $10.

Craving a burger for lunch today, so headed over to the Five Guys Burgers & Fries restaurant in Westchase.  I’ve eaten here a couple of times and remembered that the little burger is one patty (which is plenty for me), but forgot just how many fries were in a small order.

Yeah, the cup is full of fries, but so is the bag.  There were enough fries here for at least 3 people.  I can’t even imagine what a large order looks like.  Hot, fresh, and greasy, just the way fries should be.  The burger was pretty tasty too.  I got mine with mayo, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms.  Not a lot of places offer grilled onions & mushrooms at no extra charge.  For $7, I was completely full and had a ton of fries left over.

  • We’ve been craving burgers for a while now, so we headed over to Pete & Shorty’s on Gulf to Bay.  It’s been quite a while since we’ve eaten here.  The parking lot was full, but the dining area didn’t have a lot of people in it.  They were either in the bar area or out on the deck with the live music.

We both ordered the mushroom swiss burger with some onion straws and some tater tots.  While we were waiting for our food to arrive, we watched the fireworks in Clearwater.

I was a happy camper.  The burgers were tasty, cooked a nice medium, and the onion straws and tater tots were yummy too.  I think this is one of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time.  Total bill was $20 and our burger craving had been satisfied deliciously.
