We went over to Ford’s Garage in Countryside for lunch today.  It wasn’t too busy, but they seemed to be seating everyone right on top of each other.  They have a wide variety of 1/2 lb burgers and a new limited edition menu of smaller burgers.  I decided to try one of those, the Cali Roadster, but was told I couldn’t add anything to it, even though I expected to pay extra for the cheese I wanted.  This is not one of those places where the customer is always right.

This was one of the least seasoned burgers I’ve ever had in a restaurant.  My first bite, I thought I was getting a mouthful of water.  It was so bland and more medium rare, than the medium that I had ordered.  Loren ordered the Model A burger and since he’s going low carb these days, he got it without a bun and with a side of asparagus.

He said his was flavorless too and he went straight for the salt & pepper shakers.  For $31, I expected a much better experience.  We won’t be back.

We went over to Maloney’s Irish Pub in Westchase for lunch today.  They weren’t very busy, but it took a really long time for our burgers to come out. Loren got the California burger & I went for just a plain cheeseburger.

Loren liked the burgers more than I did.  I found the patty to be a little too dense.  It had a nice toasted bun and the fries were good.  He liked the guacamole and bacon on his.  Total bill was $26.

Whistlestop

I hadn’t been to the Whistle Stop Grill in Safety Harbor in quite a while, so a friend of mine & I headed over there for lunch today.  It’s an open air casual kind of place and we settled in for a chicken sandwich and a burger.

The Cali-Style Chicken Sandwich has bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato & avocado.  My friend said it was tasty, especially with some sweet potato fries.  I went for the mushroom and onion burger with a side of onion rings.

The burger was big with lots of portabello mushrooms and onions on it.  It was cooked a perfect medium and had a nice flavor to it.  Total bill with a drink was less than $25 for the two of us.

Burgers

Da Burger Joint recently opened up in Oldsmar in the space where Nosh Cafe was located.  We ordered at the counter and took a seat to wait for our food.  The first thing we noticed as soon as they started cooking our food was the smell of greasy smoke thick in the air.  Considering we were the only ones there, I can’t even imagine being able to sit in there after a bunch of food starts getting cooked.  They need to invest in a better ventilation system sooner rather than later.

Loren ordered the Pig & Cow burger, I went for the Get Ova Here burger and we split a side of panko breaded onion rings.

Loren & I disagreed about this whole meal.  He liked the flavor of his burger with it’s BBQ pork bits on it.  I didn’t like the texture of the onion rings and  I found the burger to be flavorless and way too greasy & sloppy to even pick up & eat.  Perhaps some cheese or condiments would have made it better, but on its own, it didn’t measure up to other burger places in the area.  Nothing about the experience made me think we need to try it again.  Total bill with a drink was $22.

Big Burgers

We went back over to Mother’s in West Chase for lunch.  Today we both decided to try some burgers.  Loren built one with bacon & cheddar and I went for the Mac Burger.

They make a pretty good burger here.  Loren said the burger itself didn’t have enough seasoning, but it had a schmear of Cajun aioli on it that he liked.  My Mac burger was a heart attack on a plate.  Pork belly, burger, and a patty of fried mac & cheese, plus a side of cheese sauce.

It was actually quite tasty.  Fried mac & cheese is just so wrong and so right in so many ways.  I could have just eaten that part of the sandwich and been happy.   Not a cheap lunch at $30, but we certainly weren’t hungry all afternoon.
