We went to the Botanical Gardens in Largo tonight to see the holiday lights display and stopped at Los Mariachis on the way home for dinner.

Loren got the two taco dinner & I got the shrimp chimichangas.

Both dishes were ok.  Pretty standard Mexican fare around here.  I would have preferred beans to rice with my dish, but I just stole some of Loren’s.  The chimichangas were cooked pretty well, though could have used just a little more crunch.  Overall, a pretty filling meal for $23.

  • Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen just opened up in Westchase where Chico’s used to be.  They made some changes to the interior, knocking out the front wall & putting in a garage door for an open entry to the patio.  There’s also a huge TV at the back of the restaurant.  I’m sure this place will get crowded during sporting events.

They brought chips & salsa to the table.

Loren said the salsa was ok.  They season their chips here, so they had a little spice to them.  We started off with some dumplings.

I liked them and the sauce was a spicy sweet.  I thought the filling was tasty.  We both went for tacos tonight.  Loren got the filet tacos and I got the west coast tacos and added avocado (wouldn’t you think a west coast taco would include avocado?) and a side of mac & cheese.

Overall, the tacos were just ok.  The avocado wasn’t quite ripe enough.  I don’t know what it was, but there was just something lacking about them.  The mac & cheese was pretty good.  The cheese sauce was a bit on the thick side, but otherwise it was ok.  Total bill with a drink was $27.

    Quick Lunch

We stopped in Vallarta’s Mexican Restaurant for a quick lunch after going to see the new Muppet movie.  They had a buffet, but we ordered off the menu instead.  Loren got one of the three item combos with a taco, enchilada and burrito.

He got them all with shredded beef.  He said the enchilada and burrito sort of blurred into one item, but otherwise it was pretty good.  I went for the chicken fajitas.

The fajitas were cooked well and even after I filled three tortillas, there was still enough left over for another meal.  Total bill with a drink was $25.

We don’t often get up to Lutz for dinner, but we headed out there tonight to eat at Mekenita Mexican Grille.  They were pretty busy tonight.  We munched down some chips and sauce while waiting on our burritos.

The dipping sauce has a nice smokey flavor about it, but it was a bit cold tonight, like it had just come out of the refrigerator.  Loren ordered the grilled steak burrito and I ordered the shrimp burrito.

Unfortunately, these burritos didn’t live up to our expectations.  Whoever was in the kitchen putting them together didn’t put a whole lot of care in getting the ingredients spread properly throughout.  We both found one half of our burritos to have a lot less sauce and flavor than the other side.  It had good flavor overall, but just wasn’t as good as we’ve had in the past here.  Total bill with a drink was $21.

  • La Carreta

We had planned on eating lunch at the Old Mill Restaurant until we discovered just how much of a tourist attraction it was.  Traffic on the road in was backed up and the line into the restaurant was equally as bad.  We ended up driving through Pigeon Forge and it was like driving through Orlando with all its obscure little tourist trap attractions and chain restaurants.  We ended up turning around in Sevierville and stopped at La Carreta Mexican Restaurant.

They brought chips & salsa to the table and the chips were warm & Loren enjoyed the salsa.

I ordered some queso and thought it was odd that there were two tortillas floating in the middle of it.

It had a little zing of jalepeno in it, but it wasn’t overly spicy.  Loren ordered the lunch fajitas and I got a chicken chimichanga.

Overall, the food was ok.  The guacamole was really mild, but that’s the way I like it.  The chimichange was crispy and the refired beans were good.   It’s relatively inexpensive and worth the $19 if you’re just looking for a quick lunch.
