Quick Dinnner

We just wanted something quick and inexpensive for dinner, so we headed over to Poblanos.  For a Saturday night, they weren’t very busy at all.  The last few times we’ve been here, they’ve sat us in the same booth.  We’re beginning to think of it as our booth.

Loren dug right into the chips and salsa.

Even though the salsa here isn’t chunky, he says it’s very flavorful.  They have a nice blend of ingredients that keeps him dipping until the entrees show up.

They are definitely fast moving food out of the kitchen.  This is probably one of the shortest waits we’ve had for food in a while.  Loren got a combo with a tostata and taco and I got the burrito deluxe.

The food is just buried on the plate.  Mine had a shredded chicken burrito and a beef burrito under a mound of lettuce and sour cream.  It was ok.  You don’t really get any distinct flavors in a dish like this here.  It just all blends together.   Like I said, we came for quick and inexpensive.   Service wasn’t great tonight.  After dropping off our food, we never saw the waiter again.  Total bill with a drink was $21.

  • Ate lunch at Tijuana Flats in Oldsmar today.  Decided to try something besides the chimichanga and ended up ordering a steak and cheesy burrito.

Gotta say, I found it a bit on the dry side and the grilled onions inside it needed to be cooked longer.  I ended up getting some sour cream to smother over it, but overall, probably not something I’d order again.  With the rice and beans to make it a combo, it ended up being just under $10.

The staff at Tijuana Flats is really friendly and they take refilling drinks very seriously.  I think three different people stopped by our table to see if everything was ok and if we needed refills.  They’re also quick to clear away your plates too.

  • Best Burritos

Well, this is where this blog began.  Mekenita Mexican Grille in Lutz.  It’s such an unassuming little restaurant at the end of a strip mall, but as far as I’m concerned, they make the best burritos around.

You order at the counter and then they bring out some chips and salsa to your table.

This is the one place where I actually eat the chips and salsa.  It has a smoked chipolte flavor.  Not too spicy, but is amazing with the warm chips.  They had to bring us out a second batch because the first didn’t last very long.

My burrito of choice is the Crispy Tiger Shrimp Burrito.

This is one big ol’ stuffed burrito.  It’s filled with crispy fried shrimp, refried beans, citrus rice, cabbage, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and a cilantro lime aioli.  It’s the lime aioli that really sets off this dish.  I was able to finish half of it and the just tore apart the other half and ate the shrimp.  There was no way I could finish the whole thing.

Loren ordered the Grilled Skirt Steak burrito.

He was only able to eat half of his too.  They really stuff the burritos full.  They also have a salsa bar so you can add some heat to your dish as well.   Total bill was $20 with a drink.

  • We ate dinner at Hacienda Mexican Grill over on Drew Street tonight.  It wasn’t very busy for a Friday night, but I’m all for not having to wait for a table.

They started us off with some chips and salsa.

Loren said the salsa tasted very fresh, though it wasn’t very spicy at all.  He ordered the carnitas.

He really enjoyed the dish.  Said everything tasted very fresh and flavorful.  The pork was very tender.  The guacamole had a little kick to it.  The rice and beans were standard fare.

    I ordered the shrimp chimichanga.

It was rather disappointing.  The shrimp tasted as though they had been frozen and quickly defrosted.  They just had a taste to them that was not fresh and flavorful.  Definitely not good eats.

They had live music tonight, but I’m never sure what the proper etiquette is when they come to your table and play.  Should you let your food get cold while you watch and listen or is considered rude to continue eating?  Don’t get wrong, they were very good, but I’d just rather not have them focus directly on our table while we’re eating.

    Total bill was $24.

  • Had lunch at Salsa’s in Oldsmar today.   This is the second time I’ve eaten here and it’s been busy both times.  We started out with some chips and salsa and I ordered the cheese dip.

Loren thought the salsa was very bland.  Not spicy at all.  He thought maybe it was leftover marinara sauce from the Italian restaurant that used to be in the space.   The cheese dip, on the other hand, had a little kick of jalapeno.

He ordered the lunch chicken fajitas and asked the waiter if it came with guacamole.  The waiter said yes it did.

If you’ll notice from the photo, there’s no guacamole there.  Unfortunately our waiter never returned to our table, so it’s not like we could order some.  Both times, I’ve been here, the service has been less than stellar.  They take your order, drop off your food, and then they never check back with you until you’re ready for the check.

    I ordered the chicken creama.

It’s a rather plain dish, with not a lot of flavor going on.  The chicken was tender though.  Total lunch with a drink ran us $23.
