Casa Tina

We hadn’t been to Casa Tina in a while, so we headed over there for dinner tonight.  We remember when it was just a small, cramped restaurant.  They’ve expanded several times now and the place was loud and crowded, but at least we didn’t have to wait for a table.

We started off with the nachos minus the jalapenos.

These are just bean & cheese nachos with a little sour cream.  They’re good, but there are a lot more chips than available beans & cheese.  Loren ordered the Tacos Guadalajara.

He got one pork and one carne.  He said he liked the pork one better, but it’s all about the sauces.  There’s a jalapeno, a smokey one, and one that he said had a hint of habanero, but it wasn’t too hot.  I ordered the chicken flutes.

I asked for the salsa & guac to be on the side, but that didn’t happen.  Otherwise, this is my favorite dish here.  The flutes are crispy on the outside, but the chicken and cheese on the inside is tender, flavorful and yummy.  We’ll definitely try to sit on the outside patio next time because it was so loud inside that you could barely have a conversation.  Total bill with a drink was $45.

  • A Senor Tequila location recently opened up in Westchase on Race Track Road.  It’s a spacious restaurant, but they’ve got it set up with two entrances so if you go in the wrong one, you have to walk through the restaurant to get to the hostess station even though there are servers standing at the other entrance.

I’ve actually been twice, once with a friend for lunch & then again for dinner.  Lunch service was slow to get the food out, but it seemed better at dinner time.  For the lunch visit, I had a chimichanga and my friend had the enchiladas with mole sauce.

This is pretty generic Mexican food.  The flavors are ok, but nothing is overly spicy or overly flavorful.  When Loren & I went for dinner, we started with some queso and then got the fajitas for two.

Loren said the salsa was vibrant.  Had a fresh taste to it.  The queso dip wasn’t too spicy.  The fajitas were a mix of chicken, beef, shrimp, and pork.  It was plenty of food for two people and the meats were all very tender and cooked well.  The lunch entrees ran about $8 and dinner with a drink was $35.

    Casa Tina

It was a rainy Saturday and Mexican food sounded good for lunch so we headed over to Casa Tina in Dunedin.   We were reminiscing about our first visit here when they were just a narrow, one room restaurant.  It’s expanded and grown several times over the years, but the food is still tasty.  We just missed the lunch crowd and Loren was ready to dig into some chips and salsa.

He said the salsa had a definite kick to it.  Fresh and tasty, but a bit spicier than he remembered.  He ordered the carnitas which came with beans and rice.

I tasted the carnitas and couldn’t stop eating them.  They were so tender.  Perfectly cooked tasty bites of pork.  I figured I should stop before I got forked in the hand.  Besides, the chicken flutes were calling to me.

This is one of my favorite dishes here.  Shredded chicken deep fried in flour tortillas.  It also comes with beans and rice.  I’ve learned to get the salsa & guacamole on the side since they’re both too spicy for me, but Loren loves them.  Our taste buds were very happy by the time we were done.   Total bill with a drink was $34.

  • Loco Gringos

We were in Lakeland around dinnertime and after walking around Kentucky Ave and checking wait times, we ended up at Loco Gringos.  There was no wait and we quickly discovered why.  They brought chips & salsa to the table which was probably the best part of the meal.

Loren got the chicken curry tacos which were rather on the bland side and I tried the chicken chimichanga which was also nothing to write home about.  Everything tasted very generic and processed.

Service was slow and somewhat neglectful.  Definitely not a place we’d go back to.  Total bill with a drink was $23.

  • Sazon

We were heading through Sylva on the way back to the cabin and stopped at Sazon Mexican Restaurant for dinner.  It’s a small, out of the way place that served up some really tasty Mexican food.   Loren got the carnitas chimichanga and I went for one of my favorite dishes, puffy tacos.

Loren thought the salsa was fresh and tasty and really liked the chimichanga.  Everything was flavorful.  I love crunchy flour tortillas and you don’t see them at too many restaurants.  It’s such a light crunch compared to corn tortillas.  The tacos were simply meat, lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream, but it all came together in a perfect little bite.  Total bill with a drink was $23.
