Indian Food

We were headed to the Holiday Lights at the Florida Botanical Gardens and stopped at Taste of Punjab for dinner.  They weren’t busy at all, but the food was good.  Loren munched on the papadum while we waited for our food.

I’m so predictable when it comes to Indian food.  Butter chicken is my go-to dish and this one did not disappoint.  I order it mild, but it still had enough heat and a wonderful mix of spices and flavors.  That’s what I love about Indian food; each bite tempts a different part of your tongue and it all melds so beautifully together.

We also got the garlic naan and Loren tried the goat korma.

I think the only thing he didn’t like about it was that the goat still had bones in it.  Other than that, it had a great flavor and the medium spiciness was just right for him.  If we’re down in Largo, we’d definitely eat there again.  Total bill with a drink was $37.

  • Bland Food

We were driving through St Pete tonight and ate dinner at India Grill on Central Ave.  The thing we like most about Indian food is the depth of flavor that’s usually there from start to finish.  The food here was just bland.  We started off with the Veggie Samosa.

They were stuffed with potatoes and peas and probably had more flavor than anything else we ate tonight.  Loren said even the green sauce that was served with them wasn’t spicy or flavorful.  Loren tried the Chef’s Special Biryani and I got the Butter Chicken and some garlic naan.

The serving sizes were fine and we both had some leftovers.  Loren’s Biryani had meat, chicken, and shrimp in it.  He ordered his medium/mild and I ordered mine mild, but neither had any spice whatsoever in them.  Even the naan tasted like it was missing something.  This isn’t a restaurant we’ll be returning to.  Total bill with a drink was $39.

    Friday Spice

We decided on Indian food for dinner tonight and headed over to Desi Tadka in Oldsmar.  Loren got some Mulligatawny soup and we split an order of keema samosas.

The soup had a nice flavor and wasn’t overly spicy.  You could really taste the lentils in it.  The samosa had a nice crunch and the filling was flavorful.  We didn’t stray far from our comfort zone for our entrees.  I get what I always get, the butter chicken and Loren got the Chicken do Pyaza.

And the meal wouldn’t be complete without some garlic naan.  My dish was spiced perfectly, meaning very mild.  Loren’s was a bit spicier than he had anticipated.  The different Indian restaurants we go to are very different in their interpretation of medium spicy.  We both had some leftovers tonight.  It’s such a hard balance deciding whether or not to finish what’s in front of you because it’s so tasty or extend the tastiness and bring some home.  The only issue we had was that the service was really slow.  Total bill with a drink was $45.

  • Spicy Dinner

We prefer small, quiet restaurants, so tonight we headed over to Laziz Indian Cuisine for dinner.  We started off with the Onion Bhaji.

This was the first time we tried it and it was really tasty.  It had a little bit of spice, lots of flavor, and a nice crunch.  I also ordered a cucumber & tomato salad.

We’d eaten most of it before I remembered to take a photo.  I’m always surprised that something so simple tastes so good, especially as a contrast to spicy food.  No surprise with what I ordered, it’s the butter chicken for me every time.  Loren got the Chicken Jalfrezi and we also got some garlic naan.

Our taste buds were really happy.  The flavors are just so wonderful in these dishes.  We even managed to have some leftovers, though it was hard to keep from eating every last drop of it.  Total bill with a drink was $41.

  • The Indian restaurant on Forest Lakes and Tampa Road in Oldsmar has new owners again.  I think this is the third set of owners it’s had.  Now it’s owned by the same folks that own Deeya Indian Cuisine in Clearwater.  There was only one other table of customers while we were there.  We started off with the Keema Samosa.

These were flavorful and crunchy.  I liked dipping them in one of the sauces that came with the papadum.  Loren got the chicken tikka.

He’d never ordered this before.  It was kind of like Indian fajitas.  The chicken was very tender and flavorful.  He really enjoyed it.  I ordered the butter chicken and the garlic naan.

Granted, this is the only Indian dish I ever get because it’s just so yummy.  The depth of flavors and creaminess are just wonderful.  The chicken was tender and I managed to finish the whole thing.  The garlic naan was good too.  We had no complaints about the food, but the overall atmosphere in the restaurant just didn’t seem friendly to me.  I’m not sure how to explain it.  Total bill with a drink was $41.
