When you walk in the door at Pico Rojo, you’re immediately enveloped in the wonderful smell of charcoal rotisserie chicken.  Makes me hungry just thinking back on it.  Since I like dark meat and Loren likes white, we usually just split a whole chicken which comes with four sides.  I went for a salad and cole slaw and Loren got the asparagus and rice/beans combo.

This really is some of the best chicken around.  It’s tender and juicy with a crispy, spicy skin on it.  The way they cook it gives it such an amazing overall flavor.  Loren likes the green dipping sauce, where I prefer the creamy one.  The side dishes are fresh and tasty, but the chicken is definitely the star of the meal.  Total with a drink was $23.

We went back to Pico Rojo tonight because we had a $10 coupon only to find out they’re no longer accepting any coupons.

We ordered the whole chicken meal which came with 4 sides.

The rice and beans were good, the fried cheese, not so much.  It was rubbery and didn’t have any flavor whatsoever.

I liked the cole slaw, it had a nice tangy flavor.  I didn’t like the plantains though.  They were kind of tough.  The chicken, however, was as good as we remembered it from the last time we were here.  It has a nice texture and flavor.  And we also had to get the chicken empanadas.

This is just one of the tastiest empanadas around.  So many different flavors going on inside.   Total dinner was $30, but we had quite a bit of leftovers.

TGIF

For a four day workweek, this one seemed to last forever, so when it came time for lunch on Friday, a few of us headed over to the Latin American Grill in Oldsmar.

My two co-workers hadn’t eaten there before, but I’ve had dinner there a few times and it’s always been good.  The restaurant was empty though, which was a surprise for a Friday afternoon.

For $18, we got pork chops, steak fajitas, and a small Cuban sandwich.

Everyone enjoyed the food.  I got the Cuban and if that was a small, I don’t even want to imagine what a large looks like.  The pork was really tasty in it.  For a quick, inexpensive lunch, this is a great place in Oldsmar.

Mucho Bueno

We’d seen the signs for Pico Rojo when we ate at Kaiko and finally decided to try it.  Plus we had a $10 Restaurant.com coupon.

You can smell the charcoal rotisserie as you walk in the door.  The owner was really nice and explained the menu to us and how they prepare the food.  Everything sounded really good.

We started off with a chicken empanada.

I’ve eaten a lot of empanadas in my day, but none quite like this.  I can’t even begin to describe the amazing flavors in it.  One bite and I was ready to order a few more.  It had a nice crispy shell with a chicken and vegetable mixture, plus a slice of black olive, hard-boiled egg, and raisins.  It came with a jalapeno sauce, but honestly didn’t need any flavor enhancements.

We opted for a whole chicken which came with 4 sides.  We got a side salad, coleslaw, black beans, and jasmine rice.

Everything was so fresh and tasty.  I was surprised they used jasmine rice (which is one of my favorites) and mixing it with the beans made for a wonderful flavor combination.  The cole slaw was fresh with a light dressing on it.  The chicken was incredibly tender with a nice mellow charcoal flavor.   The owner told us they had the charcoal rotisserie oven shipped all the way from South America.

This is definitely a restaurant we’ll go back to.  With the $10 off coupon, the total bill was $14 and we have plenty of leftover chicken for tomorrow.

Didn’t feel like cooking tonight, so we headed over the Latin American Grill Argentine in Oldsmar.

We’ve been here a few times.  It’s a small restaurant, but the food packs a lot of flavor.  They start you off with some cuban bread with a chimichurri sauce to dip it in.

You know it has to be good when Loren eats more bread that I do.  The sauce is very garlicy and full of herbs.

We split a chicken empanada for an appetizer.

It was nice and crispy and the chicken filling was really tasty.  I’d be happy with just a couple of these for dinner.   My dinner came with 2 sides and I chose the chicken soup as one of them.

It was chicken and rice with a lot of veggies.  It had a really nice flavor to it, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was.  There was almost a sweetness to it, but I don’t know if it was just from the fresh vegetables or if something else was added.  In either case, it was a yummy bowl of soup on a rainy night.

Loren got the roasted pork with yellow rice and beans.

Inevitably, if there’s roasted pork on the menu, he’s going to get it. This one had a bunch of onions plus the chimichurri sauce mixed it.  He scarfed the entire thing.

I went for the Milanesa de Pollo with mashed potatoes.

There was enough chicken here to feed at least two people.  It was nicely pan fried with a lot of seasoning on it.  Maybe a little too much for my taste.  It sort of tasted salty, but maybe with a little lemon thrown in.  The chicken was very tender and the mashed potatoes were homemade, which is the way all mashed potatoes should be.

For $35 we got an appetizer, two entrees and a drink, plus have of my chicken for leftovers.  Everything was really tasty and flavorful and the service was good too.  It’s one of those restaurants we enjoy whenever we go there, but we just keep forgetting that it’s there.
