So Salty

We had lunch at Tampa Bay Brewing Company in Westchase today.  Loren tried the hot pastrami sandwich and I went for the brats & mash.

He really liked all the flavors in the sandwich.  He said even though some of the ingredients are things he wouldn’t normally eat, together they all melded to make a well balanced sandwich.   The red beans & rice are his favorite side dish here.   The brats & mash were tasty, but as with most things I’ve ever eaten here, the salt content is way too high.  It tastes great at first and then my tongue feels over saturated with salt.  I don’t know if it’s done purposely to get people to order more beer, but for me it’s just too much.  Total bill with a drink was $21.

We went over to Mother’s in Westchase for lunch today.   We’re making our way through the menu.  Today Loren tried the Coffee Rubbed Beef on Weck and I went for the Meatloaf slider & soup combo.

We both got the soup of the day which was a chicken pot pie soup.  It did taste like a creamy version of the filling for a chicken pot pie.  The beef on weck had a horseradish sauce on it that gave it a little kick.  Loren enjoyed it.  The meatloaf sliders aren’t much to look at, but they have a surprising burst of flavor to them.   There’s something to be said for bacon onion jam and the caramelized onion aioli that’s on them.  They were delicious.  Total bill with a drink was $35.

Wild Rover

I’m sure we’re in the minority when we visit a brewery to check out the food.  We kept seeing the sign for The Wild Rover in Westchase and finally drove back into the industrial park where it is to see what they had to offer in the way of English food.

The menu is small, mostly pub food so we decided to try a variety of things and nibble our way through them all.  We got the Cobb salad, the beer cheese dip, the sausage roll and the steak and ale pie.

My favorite was the sausage roll.  It was wrapped in a puff pastry and had a thick, meaty filling.  I could have eaten a few of those.  The bread with the beer cheese dip had a nice crusty exterior and soft warm inside.  We ended up dipping the fries from the steak & ale pie plate into the cheese dip and that was divine.  The salad was a typical Cobb, but with arugula.  The steak & ale filling was tasty, but the puff pastry on top was way too dense.  I prefer puff pastry to be light & flaky.   They only had a couple of things available for dessert so we tried the banoffee pie.

Not so much pie, but more a very tasty banana and toffee pudding.  It was delicious.  Overall, the food was pretty good.  Total bill with a drink was $40.

Tasty BBQ

We stopped at Jimbo’s BBQ in Tampa for lunch today.  We were in a hurry, so both got the pulled pork sandwich with different sides.

We both liked the pork and bbq sauce.  It was tender and tasty with a nice smokey flavor.  The hush puppies were good, but none of the other sides really stood out.  The fried okra had a good crunch, the beans were a bit sweet, and the potato salad & mac & cheese were just ok.  Total bill with a drink was $20.

  • Big Burgers

We went back over to Mother’s in West Chase for lunch.  Today we both decided to try some burgers.  Loren built one with bacon & cheddar and I went for the Mac Burger.

They make a pretty good burger here.  Loren said the burger itself didn’t have enough seasoning, but it had a schmear of Cajun aioli on it that he liked.  My Mac burger was a heart attack on a plate.  Pork belly, burger, and a patty of fried mac & cheese, plus a side of cheese sauce.

It was actually quite tasty.  Fried mac & cheese is just so wrong and so right in so many ways.  I could have just eaten that part of the sandwich and been happy.   Not a cheap lunch at $30, but we certainly weren’t hungry all afternoon.
