We had a coupon for Smokey Bones so headed over there for lunch today.  I was craving some baby back ribs and ordered the house rack.

I was disappointed in them.  They were charred a bit too much for me and the other set of ribs under the one in the photo were from the end of the rack, so very small and rather tough.  There just wasn’t enough juicy meat on these bones.  The baked beans weren’t cooked long enough either.  They had a bit too much texture to them.  Loren ordered the pulled pork sammy & a side salad.

He said it was pretty good, especially after adding some bbq sauce to it.  Total bill with a drink after the coupon was $21.

I stopped off at Georgia Boys BBQ on the way home from work today & picked up a rack of ribs for dinner.

There isn’t a lot of seasoning on their ribs, but they do have a nice smoky flavor.  These were a bit on the greasy side though.  For $23, we’ve got enough to feed us dinner & lunch tomorrow.

  • After going to see SkyFall at the movies, we went over to Smokey Bones on Gulf to Bay for a late lunch.  From the moment, we walked in the door, the smell of BBQ surrounded us.  It smells so good in there.  We decided to start off with the Southwest spring rolls.

They had some heat, but were pretty tasty.  The only issue was that our entrees came out almost immediately after the appetizer did.  They definitely lose some points for timing.  Loren ordered the 1/3 rack of ribs with a side salad and baked potato.

He ordered the St Louis ribs, but the bill says he got baby back ribs.  He couldn’t seem to tell the difference, but he said they were very good.  He cleaned his plate and started eyeing mine.  I went for a combo of baby back ribs and pulled pork with onion rings and mac & cheese.

The baby back ribs were delicious.  The sauce was sweet and the ribs were very tender.  Before I ordered, I had planned on taking the pulled pork home as leftovers, so I didn’t eat much of it.  I did find the pulled pork kind of dry though.  The onion rings were the big disappointment on the plate.  They just weren’t crunchy.  The mac & cheese was like lava when it came to the table and still steaming when I put part of it in the leftover box.  It had a good flavor and was really creamy.  Loren had talked about chocolate cake the night before, so we couldn’t resist ordering a slice.

It was delicious.  Moist and chocolatety and perfect with the scoop of vanilla ice cream.  Yum!  Total bill with a drink was $56.

  • A Little Dry

BBQ was on the menu for dinner so we headed to downtown Safety Harbor and Brady’s Backyard BBQ.  Loren’s a fan of the riblets, so he got those with some garlic red potatoes and greens.

He said the riblets were good, but he didn’t like the potatoes.  I liked them, though.  I ordered the brisket with a side of cornbread pudding, a try of potato salad, and some mac & cheese that they had on the menu tonight.

I like really tender and juicy bbq meats and the brisket just didn’t do it for me.  I found it dry.  Loren liked it though, so he ended up with most of it for lunch tomorrow.  The cornbread pudding and potato salad are always delish, but I also found the mac & cheese to be a bit on the dry side too.  It had good flavors and the wait staff were raving about it, but I just prefer mine a bit creamier.  Total bill with a drink was $30.

  • Stopped by Eli’s BBQ today & picked up a couple of BBQ pork sandwiches & headed down to the water to enjoy them.

Eli’s is it when it comes to BBQ for me.  The pork is always tender and moist.  There’s always a line of people there since it’s open Friday & Saturdays until 6pm, but always worth the wait.  It’s also cash only and the best $15 we spent this week.
